Today I made a test grooms cake because I wanted to see if I could do it before the wedding. So here it is....The Stargate from Stargate: SG1

Is it supposed to be a cauldron or a black hole?  I like it, but I was just trying to figure out what it was...

Will all your guests know what it is? Can you write stargate on it?

No, they won't all know what it is, and that is what I am going for. No, I cannot write Stargate on it, that would just be weird. FI and a few of our friends will know, and that's all that matters.

@Enchanted1: Thanks :) We have watched the entire Stargate SG1 series twice, and Stargate Atlantis twice, and we watched every episode of Stargate Universe :)

My geeky FI says "well done." He watches it nightly while perusing the internet. :)

That's pretty cool! Really like how the event horizon/wormhole turned out.

We had a TARDIS and even though less than a 1/4 of the people there knew what it was we still loved it. I don't think you need to explain it.

i assume that second pic was the inspiration?  it looks like a great match except for the shade of blue, i wonder if you can make it darker?  overall, great job! not that i know anything about star gate, but based on the pics above, it looks great!

i knew what it was before i read it - i think the chevrons need to be a bit bigger and more triangle and what about using model clay (or a cupcake) and making a dial up device to put to the side of the cake to finish the effect

yes, im a stargate nerd :)

Thank you guys so much :) I am pretty happy with it....

As for the event horizon color, I used almost the entire bottle of blue food coloring, so when I actually do make it I will buy more blue LOL it does need to be darker.

The chevrons, I made them as big as I could in order to fit all 39 of them on there *which I did lol*

I actually thought about making a cupcake DHD, and still might, but it would be ok if I didn't since SGC doesn't have one LOL

This was just a test cake, and it only took about an hour to decorate it, so I will take a bit more time on the final version.

And yes, the second picture was the inspiration, I also printed off a list of all the chevrons and tried my damndest to get them right :)

But, I do have say, this was THE FIRST cake I HAVE EVER decorated in my life! Seriously! Never made a cake in my life....haven't tasted it yet, except for the crumbs and frosting that stuck to my hands, and it wasn't bad :)

@Miss. Snowball: You can claim it's the Antartica DHD? Awesome job for your first (or even later) cake!

I'd agree that the blue is off, but otherwise, it's pretty darn close to your inspiration. Kudos!

Great job!! I agree with the blue being a tad light but it looks just like the picture otherwise! I'm pretty impressed :)

I have an update to the test cake....it's pretty funny, and pretty sad....Last night we had date night, and before we left I decided we needed to hide the cake from the kitties, and since I am not a baker I don't have a cake holder, and nothing would fit over the top to cover it so the kitties wouldn't end up in a sugar coma when we got home. FI suggested I put it in the oven....well today while I was at work, I got a text from him saying he is SOOOOOO SORRY! He preheated the oven and forgot the cake was in there :(

    Then I got this picture....

my DIY test grooms cake! : wedding cake grooms cake food dessert Sad Cake

He felt so horrible, I thought it was kind of funny, but he did learn his lesson, always check the oven before turning it on....He said it is still edible, and he said it was DELICIOUS!!!! And a coworker said "well, the blue looks right now" HAHA!
