Yikes.  I think the biggest thing that stood out to me is that you feel your appointments are rushed and you don’t get a chance to ask questions.

If I were you, I’d check with your insurance and see if there are any other providers in the network you can try out, whether that’s another OB or if a midwife practice is a better fit for you.

nali2012:  Have your questions written out on a card before you go to the doctor’s office. Then just speak up and say “I have some questions.”

Is there a reason you are having ultrasounds at every visit?

You should not feel rushed at your appointments. But I bet the doctor has seen enough ultrasounds to be able to determine the gender easily- just because you couldnt tell would not make me doubt their abilities.

My OB appointments always went really quickly but I didn’t have regular ultrasounds at mine so I don’t know how fast those usually go when they are doing an ultrasound at every appointment.  I had a NT scan and 20 week one and they both lasted 30-40 minutes.  And the ultrasound tech performed them, not my Dr.

At 15 weeks he probably could tell the gender though if he saw it.  They choose what pictures they want to print out, so maybe he saw it and didn’t print it out?  Still, at my ultrasounds I could see the screen the whole time and the tech always described what she was doing and looking at so we could see, too.  My first ultrasound was at 15 weeks and it looked exactly like a girl looks.  The tech wouldn’t affirm 100% since I think you’re supposed to be 16 weeks before the gender is considered accurate.  Still at girl at 20 weeks for us.

Look for a different Dr. if you don’t like yours.  My DH didn’t like ours and always felt rushed.  A different on call OB from the same practice ended up delivering ours and we actually liked her a lot better!

nali2012: You could always post the u/s pic here so all of us doctors can tell you! 😉

I have heard quite a few stories from my u/s tech friends of docs getting gender wrong. They’re doctors, not ultrasound techs! 15 weeks is still quite early for a totally accurate gender reading. I wouldn’t start buying blue yet.

If you aren’t meshing with your doctor, I’d highly encourage you to switch.  Having a baby is a very special time and you deserve to have the pregnancy and birth experience you desire. I can’t imagine having a doctor I wasn’t a fan of delivering my baby! before I had a baby, I thought all the ObGyn did was “catch”, but my doc was there the entire time I was pushing, encouraging me and chatting with us during contractions. You definitely want someone you are comfortable with!

I agree with some of the pp’s … find a new doctor! Being rushed at any type of appointment that you schedule and pay for is simply unprofessional and should not be tolerated (at least not in my book)! If it happens once in a blue ok fine but at every appointment … absolutely not. As far as not seeing the dr going anywhere near the babies private area but yet revealing gender that’s interesting. Dr must be really good and most likely saw it quickly when scanning? I doubt a dr would reveal a gender without even looking … I surely hope not!

nali2012:  I can totally see it!  How do you not see it?  Am I the only one who see’s it’s penis ?!? I just want to know if I’m crazy or if I’m only seeing it because you’ve already said it’s a boy but I’m almost positive I can clearly see it.

ETA – If I start from the top down I see the babies face, arms/hands up and to the side, babies body, penis and upper portion of babies legs.

I cant read an US for my life but either way, I would seriosuly consider finding a provider who addresses your needs and doesnt rush you in and out in five minutes. While many people have uneventful and perfect pregnancy, you want to be able to go to your provider with any issues you have and get them taken seriosuly. Also I dont know if you care since your name isnt on them but your docs name is on the US you posted and it isnt exactly John Smith MD.
