I am dancing with my dad to Billy Joel's "Lullabye". VERY sentimental but very sweet....we ALSO have a tedency to swing each other around other people's wedding to the song "Cotton Eye Joe"...and we are horrible dancers and everyone laughs and loves it..... My dad Hates!...sentimental So...the plan...we play my song and have the DJ scratch it into "cotton eye joe" half way through.
Could you play your song for a bit and then have them shift into something that your dad could rock you around the floor to that he loves from the oldies?
i think youd really like steve kirwan's my little girl!
i fell in love with the lyrics!
I had to let the father/daughter dance thing go too. I wanted to dance with him to Tiny Dancer, but he wants to dance to the song he named me after, which is DEFINITELY not a father/daughter dance song.
Could you maybe let your dad have this one and dance to Only You? I honestly don't think it matters too much if a song "screams father/daughter song"
What about My Girl? It's only kind of sappy, it's an oldie, and it sounds like it could fit both of you.
Or maybe I'm way off base?
I wish my Dad had an opinion on the father/daughter dance song...I'm trying to get him to help me pick one, but he just has no opinions on it!
We're dancing to that song!! My dad thought it was a little different, but he's a really good dancer, so he'll work something out to it! I'm sorry that he doesn't like it...I hope you find something that you'll love equally as much!
@HotChild! I wanted to dance to TinyDancer. Have you heard the instrumental version by Vitamin String Quartet? That is my favorite song ever!
I finally decided to dance to the song Last Date. It is a song my Dad has played on the piano for years. So I'm having him play it on his keyboard and record it. Then all we have to do is have someone go over and press the first key on the piano and his recorded version will start to play. We've hired a band and I think they'll play with it. Sooo excited about that song choice!
I decided to let my Dad have complete control over the father/daughter dance song. I trust his judgment, and it's a way to get him involved in the wedding. In my mind, the song doesn't have to be "perfect," it's the thought that he picked something out that counts. Sorry, I don't have any really great suggestions for song choices.
We're dancing to Two of Us, by The Beatles. But I suggested those two songs ("Daughter" and "Father and Daughter") to my dad as well, because I love all of them. Two of Us made him cry, because it's not a typical father/daughter song, and he was really touched that it reminded me of us. I do have a Beatles theme running through my wedding, so it may not be your style like it is mine, but something to think about. Play him Father and Daughter!! It's great! You'll figure it out--sorry it's difficult!
We chose Fathers & Daughters by Paul Simon, but some other options that I selected were Stand by Me, Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison, Anything You Want by Roy Orbinson and There are Places I Remember by the Beatles.
Thanks for all the great suggestions, ladies! I think I'm going to make him a CD/booklet of lyrics, etc., and let him choose from there.. I'm sure we'll figure something out!
Awww... I love that song. It's such a perfect father/daughter dance song. Oh well. There are lots of other good ones out there too...
My dad doesn't like my songs either. He wants to do a fast goofy dance, but I can't bare to do it. If it were up to him we'd probably be dancing to Love Shack by the B52's. That was his favorite song to dance and embarass me to. lol. I picked Gracie by Ben Folds. Oh well, maybe I'll opt for The Beatles :).
Have your dad listen to "I Loved Her First" by Heartland.
I bet he loves it!!!!
My dad and I are dancing to "Walk With You" by Edwin McCain. I cried like a baby the first time I heard it, and I still get emotional when I listen to it. I sent the link to the video to my mom and dad, and my mom told me that my dad got all choked up listening to it, too. I only heard it on the radio once, and I thank God that I did! Otherwise I would have totally missed out on this beautiful song.

Walk With You (Edwin McCain, Maia Sharp)
I’ll take this slow sweet walk with you You’ll let go of my hand to say “I do” He will discover just how blessed a life can be I know ‘cause all those years ago someone handed you to me
Every step that we take brings back the memories Winter snows and horse shows and dancing on the beach I can’t help thinking that I’m the lucky one You’re still my baby daughter and now I’ve gained a son
I’ll take this slow sweet walk with you You’ll let go of my hand to say “I do” He will discover just how blessed a life can be I know ‘cause all those years ago your mom handed you to me
Don’t miss a chance to put each other first Now that you’ve vowed for better or for worse Don’t let the beauty of this life pass you by In the times of trouble you’ll stand side by side
I’ll take this slow sweet walk with you You’ll let go of my hand to say ” I do” I picture a slow sweet walk yet to be When you’ll take my hand and say “Daddy come see” Then you’ll know what it felt like You won’t believe what it feels like Then you’ll know what it felt like when she handed you to me. She handed you to me
@HisPookie- Did you know that Loudon Wainwright's version is a cover? The original version is by Peter Blegvad, it is a little faster and a little more non-country.
You said that you didnt want country but "My little girl" By Tim Mcgraw was on my top and I dont think its really "Country" like but its a great daddy daughter song!
Another one is by Jessica simpson...YES I said it Jessica simpson (But its still good!) and its called 'You dont have to let go"
Here are the lyrics!
I don't need your strength anymore
cause you've made me strong
You may not see the woman in me
That you dreamed of
Holding me in your arms
All the days that you gave
All the moments you've saved me,
Praying for my life
Sacrificed, just to make me who I am on my own
You don't have to let go
You don't say it
But it's in your eyes
All the fears of good-bye
But I can promise
You'll always have a place, and a way to my heart
All the days that you gave
All the moments you've saved me,
Praying for my life
Sacrificed, just to make me who I am on my own
You don't have to let go
I can live
Cause you lived for me
And I can love
Because you loved me.
All the days that you gave
All the moments you've saved me,
Praying for my life
Sacrificed, just to make me who I am on my own
You don't have to let go

My Dad is my hero. Plain, and simple. He’s raised me as a single father since I was 5-years-old, and I owe everything that I am, and that I have to him. Sure, life wasn’t always a bowlful of cherries for us, but he did everything in his power over the years to make sure I was happy, and had everything I needed (and, wanted, lol). I wouldn’t go as far as saying that I was spoiled (*cough*), but he always looked out for me.. he still does..
That being said, I’ve been on the look-out for the best Daddy/Daughter dance song, since I can remember..
‘Butterfly Kisses' is great, and just thinking about it makes me tear up, but honestly, that doesn’t take much (read: over-emotional bride-to-be.. senior citizens make me cry, babies, kittens, commercials, etc.). It’s just not ‘us’, either.
‘Isn’t She Lovely’ (I love you, Mr. Wonder!), or ‘What A Wonderful World’, are close, too (he raised me on oldies), but I don’t think those fit ‘us’, either..
HRUMPH!
I was about to put my search on hold, when out of nowhere, I found it! The other night while watching ‘Knocked Up’, I heard it while the end credits rolled..
Loudon Wainwright III's - 'Daughter'
It’s just.. perfect (for the lack of a better word.. ;]).
The lyrics:
Everything she sees
she says she wants.
Everything she wants
I see she gets.
That's my daughter in the water
everything she owns I bought her
Everything she owns.
That's my daughter in the water,
everything she knows I taught her.
Everything she knows.
Everything I say
she takes to heart.
Everything she takes
she takes apart.
That's my daughter in the water
every time she fell I caught her.
Every time she fell.
That's my daughter in the water,
I lost every time I fought her.
I lost every time.
Every time she blinks
she strikes somebody blind.
Everything she thinks
blows her tiny mind.
That's my daughter in the water,
who'd have ever thought her?
Who'd have ever thought?
That's my daughter in the water,
I lost every time I fought her
Yeah, I lost every time.
(Instrumental until the end)
I’m sitting here in tears, as I listen to it over-and-over again, writing this. It just fits. From the wanting of everything, to the getting; the fights he lost (he’s a softy/pushover! ;]); the water (he always calls me his water baby).. it’s ‘us’.
The only problem?
HE HATES IT.
I played it for him last weekend when DD, and I went to visit him, and he vetoed it pretty-much right out of the gate. The lyrics are what speak to me, but he could hardly get past the instrumental part in the beginning, because it's "too country" (lol, who would have though my Dad was a music snob?).
The first song he suggested was 'Only You' (he raised me on oldies, remember), but it just doesn't scream 'father/daughter dance' to me!
My next choice would be 'Father and Daughter' by Paul Simon, but I wouldn't be surprised if he vetoes that, too..
I really want something that speaks of my love for him, and all he's done for me through the years, but each song I find is way too 'country' for his liking..
What are some really sappy, non-country songs I could show him? Any ideas?
