I went to get my dress fitted on this past Saturday. She will be taking my hem in a very little bit on both layers of my tulle, adding an American bustle, and letting the lining out a bit. It will be around $170 is that normal?

Yes, mine was around $300 to hem it, make a bustle, and take it in a bit in the sides and chest.

@Treasure43: I was very pleasantly surpised that she didn't need to do anything at the top..I just knew she would need to take it in. I am sure that saved me some money.

@mishelleez: LOL, you should ask that question.

They took my dress in at the bust and around my rear end and added a 13-point (very complicated!) bustle. It cost $215.

Mine was $1,200 for alterations.  You are getting an excellent deal.

mine was $309 total for hem, taking it in several sizes, removing flowers, changing the back to a plunging V, changing the neckline to a deep sweetheart, removing the boning over the breast, adding cups

Wow. IT seems a little high to me. But then again; so does every other one that was posted. My salon is charging $40 for all normal alterations (hem; bustle ect.) If u purchased the dress through them; they shouldn't be ripping you off. It sounds like maybe it depends what area your in. I'm in a small town. I just can't see spending that much for small alterations..... seems weird they would charge soo much..

I have had 2 alteration appointments so far (the last for hem and bustle) each has cost me about $150 sounds like I am in the "normal" ball park. I was kind of wondering if this was high as well.

    @MissChirpie: Wow 13 point bustle

@Mrs. Louboutin: That's alot.....what all are you getting done?

@clarebee:Sounds like mine is high compared to what you're paying and the work being done.

@DemoDreamer: I didn't get the dress from them.

@animated_librarian: I'm still not so sure anymore.

My alterations were $600, including hemming about a foot and taking in the sleeves.

My dress is 14 layers though, with intricate beading that they'll have to take apart bead by bead to bring in the sleeves and then resew them.

That seems like a very good price! I'm having a french bustle done and cups sewn in, that cost $168.

Sheesh!! I guess all this stuff just depends on where you go. My friend just told me that a seamstress is doing her bustle, hemming, and putting a lock on her zipper for $68!! Do you think that I can get my dress back and check that other lady out? Or just stay at the Bridal Shop? Should this include steaming?

@PrncssDva: does the $170 include pressing the dress?  if so, that's a pretty good price.  i know that in general, it's $10 for each bustle point, so the bustle alone could vary from dress to dress depending upon how complicated your bustle needs to be.

Also, the hemming cost will vary depending on where the hem can be cut.  if the dress has to be hemmed from a seam (essentially taken up) that will cost more than a hem from the bottom.

maybe ask your alterations lady to breakdown the price for you for each component and we can give you a better idea of whether the costs are reasonable or off-the-wall.  but it sounds very reasonable in my opinion.

I think that is about normal.  I am getting my alterations at an independent seamstress.  She is charging me $150 for taking it in at the top, adding a custom bustle designed by her, and the hem.

The cost of my alterations was one of the few actual costs that surprised me. I had budgetted $300 and thought that would be sufficient for everything I wanted done.

I think this is probably normal - it could also depend on your specific dress. One of my BMs went to the same tailor as me for her dress (BM dress) and all she was having done was shortening the hem and having it taken in a few sizes. It is costing her $100!!! I thuoght that sounded high compared to everything I had done!

Update: I called to see about steaming my dress yesterday. I figure it should be included, since they'll be wrinkling it more while they alter it. They ask again if I purchased it from them..why does it matter!!? I say no..she puts me on hold for 5 min. I hang up and call back .She says, "Oh I had the info for you, but you were gone." Uhm,...you have my info in the system you could have called me back. You did ask for my name and looked it up when I called! Then she tells me that because I didn't buy the dress from them steaming will be an extra $100!! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA uh NO!! All that total is a little less than what I got my dress for on Craigslist (brand new) I reffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuse to pay that much. So, then I call back to tell her that I want to pick my dress up before the lady starts working on it. She had the nerve to tell me that she will tell the lady to BRING my dress tomorrow (today). What? BRING....where is my darned dress. My mom thinks that the lady is working for them on the side and does the altering from home. That's a security issue, because they didn't have me (or anyone else) sign a waiver saying that my dress would leave the shop.

    I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo infuriated!!
