So, I had a problem when I ordered my dress, a pretty common one I think. The salon made me order a size too big, and when the dress came in way earlier than I thought it would I told them I would be taking the dress elsewhere to be altered. I know they were just trying to milk the cow, and my co-worker had recommended someone local who charges very reasonable rates so I took a chance.

When I went for the first time to this lady's house it was very much like a zoo. Animals and kids running around, very loud. I was a little bit worried. I didn't have my shoes yet, so she couldn't hem it, but she did measue the bodice and tell me it needed to be taken in at least an inch on each side. She was worried about it because of all the boning and layers and said she wasn't sure she could do it, but she would try her best.

I left from that first meeting pretty nervous. Fast forward to yesterday, I went to see her for the second time. She had taken the inside layer of the bodice in, without touching the boning or the outside layer of the dress. I put the dress on and it fit MUCH better than when I got it from the store. The corset back still closes more than I would like, but because the inside layer is 2 inches smaller it feels so much more snug.

She is now going to hem it and I will have it next week, as long as the next fittings goes well! I am so excited that its working out! Just had to gush.

Whew! I got nervous when you started talking about the zoo, but I'm glad it's coming together!

I'm so glad your alterations are working out for you.  As I was reading your post, I was getting nervous for you, worrying that it wasn't working out.  I know I had trouble with my dress because it came in 2 sizes too big.  I never quite liked how the alterations turned out, so I'm always afraid that's going to happen to everyone else.

Do you have any photos of you in the dress?

Whew! I agree, those salons are always milking the cow. Such a scam and they feed on our fears! Glad you found someone!

You would think by now that they have this whole "ordering dresses in a good size" thing nailed. Why must they insist on ordering them monstrously huge on everyone?!

I'm glad this worked out for you and that you didn't let them "milk" you.

I'm so irritated by the bridal stores that pull this crap, they didn't get me b/c my Mom just told them that I would be ordering the size that fits but several of my BMs have had issues!

Oh ... I got a little nervous with the opening of your post!  I hate to see any wrong doings with a wedding gown!  I'm glad that everything is going so well!  Wait till it's all done ... you will be even happier!!

When I told my seamstress that they had made me order it too big she just shook her head in a kind of knowing way. Then we talked about how they always tell brides it takes such a long time to get the dress in because the dress is "custom made." But then somehow my "custom made" dress is not able to be ordered in my custom size, which would save money on the need for alterations! Its all craziness.

I keep forgetting my camera when I go. I will take photos next time! I am one of those brides that doesn't want ANYONE to see my dress before the big day, so only my FMIL and FSIL have seen it! The bonus is that the shoes I picked look GREAT with the dress, too!
