The dress is really pretty!
I can see what you're talking about with the top area being a little big. Both of the alterations seem like easy fixes and it's always easier to take in a dress than let it out. If it were me I would get the waist taken in, you already have a tiny waist and the alterations would really showcase that.
Thanks! I hope I don't have to fight with the tailor to get it taken in at the waist. :) something to worry about next year, anyway.
I tried on that dress and really liked it... but DAYUM it looks good on you! Good choice! Please do go see a tailor - they can easily take it in at the waist and help with the way the fabric sits on your upper back.
THAT IS A GOOD DRESS, LADY.
@moosey: I really like it! However, you might want to see if you can exchange it for the 6. The waist shouldn't be an issue to take in, but the top might be. With necklines like the one you have (kind of folds over), if you take fabric from the sides you risk gappage at the middle of the bust. Grip some of the fabric along the side seams and see how the top looks- that's where a seamstress would tailor it.
Always good to take it somewhere and see what they say!
I think the dress is really beautiful. I was thinking of ordering from J Crew as well, but I was worried about the length. I'm 5'11 too so your post definitely gives me hope!
@moosey: Oh to be that Tall .... the dress looks lovely on you. Great choice!
@Miss Sarah Belle: If I got it in the 6 the chest would still be too large by one size... I'm wondering if I should take it into my tailor and ask her opinion while I can still return the dress? Of course telling her I don't actually need anything done to it for awhile... haha!
@moosey: I think yes, you should take it to the seamstress/tailor etc. to get an opinion. Let us know how it turns out!
Alright, so I took it in. I put on a bra this time (whoops!) and that pretty much solved the top problem-- I'm probably going to get one with some extra padding for the big day just to make sure its snug.
As for the waist-- she said it was just fine, fit like a glove, and she didn't want to touch it. I'm still wary of it, as I feel like it's a bit too big still. I will be taking it in to her next summer to be hemmed so I'm thinking if I still don't like the waist I can plead with her to just take it in a notch. My other idea was to buy a wide sash for the waist, to bling it up a bit, that could be tied tightly to help bring it in a bit.
Or I can lose a bit of weight so she has to take it in!
Hey Moosey! You're the first person in all my internet searches to have the same dress as me! I have seen plenty in the silk tricotine, but you're the first in silk chiffon!
I got mine on eBay NWT. I will need to take in the boobage area and take up the straps a tiny bit, oh and it's suuuuper long. I have 3 other Sophia dresses and fit so well so that's why I chose the gown for my wedding dress!
Yay for us 5ft11 girls! I always like j.crew's dresses and its nice to see what it looks like on a tall girl. So cute on you and with your hair.

I know it's way early for me to have a wedding dress hanging in my closet, but I knew I wouldn't be heading out to a bridal salon to shop at all, and I thought I'd play it safe and order online early, expecting I'd run into issues and have to make a few returns. And, the Sophia was on sale, so I snagged it at a lower price!
Forgive the shoddy mirror pictures-- I was sequestered in the guest room while the mister was downstairs.
I bought it in a size 8, but my chest measured at a size 4 and my hips at a 6. The hips don't seem to matter in this dress, but I think the waist is possibly still a touch too big. It slides up and down a lot when I move and I feel like it should be secure and snug against my body. Is taking a dress in half an inch to an inch in the waist stupid? I should have probably bought a 6.
The other thing is that the top looks weird to me, likely because it's two sizes too large. When I bend over it gets crumply, and the back is puffing out over the waist when I think it should be lying flat. And, shockingly, even though I'm 5'11" it needs to be hemmed! Do you guys think the waist and bust can be fixed easily by a tailor?
It's quite wrinkly from the mail and top and waist are bugging me a bit, but if I can get it to fit properly and get it steamed I think it'll be lovely!
