I posted a few weeks ago because I was torn on whether to go for a designer dress or a less expensive one, since my fiance and I are going to be the only people at our destination wedding in Bermuda. Here is the link to the older thread: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/would-purchasing-a-more-expensive-dress-be-worth-it#axzz2ewLji6Pt
But I have more story to tell:
I found a dress off the rack for $250. It was nice, but it didn’t really fit our destination wedding location; I bought it anyway because I liked it and I thought it was a great deal. My thinking was that if this dress is going to do the same thing as any other, why not just go with it. It also didn’t need any alterations, which was great.
Fast forward a few months, and I’m in my new apartment living with my “sweet” kitty cats. I have a couple of closets here, one of which is in my hallway. I stored my wedding dress there because I thought the doors on the closet would certainly keep my cats out, right?
Well, I had no incident for the first 6 or 7 weeks. Then, after a long day at work I get home and notice the hallway closet is open– I figured it was the cats, so I opened the door just to make sure they didn’t wreak any havoc, and then I notice that the pink garment bag containing my dress is just absolutely shredded. I open the bag praying that they didn’t get any farther than that outer layer, and discover that they have clawed 1-2″ tears and multiple pin holes in to my gown. It had an organza overlay, so I knew there was pretty much no way to fix that without it being noticeable.
I call my fiance nearly in tears to tell him the bad news. I was actually really proud of that dress because I had bought it all on my own without fiance’s help (and he makes a whoooole lot more money than I do). I just want someone to vent my frustration to, because however much I wanted to banish my sweet little kitty kitty outside to live with the strays I couldn’t do it, when fiance says something totally unexpected: “Don’t worry, I’ll just buy you a new dress. We can find you a nicer one anyway.” Adding in the caveat that it has to stay at his apartment in between the time it comes in and wedding day. We aren’t traditional so it didn’t bother me, and I asked him if he would help me pick it out then too, because his opinion is most important to me. It’s just going to be the two of us in Bermuda, so I definitely wanted a dress he loves! He’s such a sweet, generous man too; he tells me I have no budget, since we don’t have to pay for things like caterers, rentals, and DJ’s.
I tried on some more budget-conscious dresses. He doesn’t like any of them. So we went to a large boutique that carries couture gowns and he tells the consultant just to find me anything I like, there is no budget. So we start pulling Claire Pettibone gowns because I love the vintage feel, and he loved them too!
We found THE GOWN, and he had it purchased before I even asked! He is such a sweetie!!
All the bumps in the road were totally worth it. He says I look like a princess, I love this gown, and now I know what I’m going to be wearing on the beautiful day I marry the most wonderful, thoughtful, generous and sweet man I have ever known.
