My seamstress called me this morning, as I was walking in to get a pre-wedding facial, and she let me know there had been a professional robber in her building (Upper West Side Manhattan).

Of the hundreds of wedding dresses she has in her apartment, the theif took mine.

Yes, you are reading that correctly, I have no wedding dress. And my wedding is in two months.

She is a custom designer and has offered to make me a new one for free from scratch, but I just thought I would share this with hive for a little commiseration and support.

    :(

are you serious??? OMG!! i'm so sorry!! that's horrible.

the good news (always look for the silver lining): you've still got almost 2 months - which should be plenty of time to make a dress.

    still sucks tho. sorry!

Wow - I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this stress, although it's great to know that the store will sort you out with a dress free of charge. As nybride09 says, you still have 2 months so I'm sure it makes it easier to look on the bright side - imagine getting this call the week before your big day!

omg! I am so so sorry! But don't worry, you will have a new one. I HATE stealing! My apt was broken into in brooklyn, and I lost everything including irreplaceable items. But upper west, huh? That doesn't happen TOO much up there. They only took your dress? I guess you have good taste.

Are you sure she just didn't mess it up or something? That sounds like a load of crap to me. The robbers only stole one dress out of hundreds? I'm glad she's going to make you a new dress but will you lose money? I would ask for the cost difference if the new dress is less then the old one.

Hive hugs to you!  I however, take the same sentiments as Kate and wonder if there is another story that goes along with this story?

Why your dress?  (I am sure it's gorgeous though)  Just make sure she is held to her contract and that the dress is ready well enough in time for any last minute changes.

Again nothing but love and hugs to you.  This is awful!!!  Don't fret and let us know how it is resolved b/c we're in your corner!

Aghhh poor girl!!! The bright side is that you WILL have a dress, and it won't cost anything extra for you, other than some sadness and stress. I'm sorry! I guess that means your dress was just so stunning the burglar couldn't resist it!

I'm hoping this is just some sort of awful mix up and your dress is found. If not then I'm so happy that you'll still have a dress on your wedding day.  GL and ((((hugs))))

My fiance and sister thought maybe she was lying to, but she is incrediblely talented and she can fix anything so I don't know why she would lie. Very, very strange. She charges thousands of dollars for custom gowns, like 3,000+ which is a lot more than my dress was, so I think I am getting the better deal in the end. It is just hard when you grow attached to something. No wedding is perfect, eh?

Wow I'm so sorry to hear about your situation!

It sounds really strange, as others have noted above. Since YOUR property was stolen, you should ask to see the police report that she must have filed that proves there was a break-in and what was stolen. If you're shy, tell her you need it for your "records" or whatnot. If she can't produce a police report that is a red, red flag.

I am so sorry!  Let her make you another one and make sure she adds a little extra to the dress or gives you a price break because of all that you will have to go through while having another one made! HUGS

Did you ask her if she filed a police report?  I would want one to be filed - especially since it is YOUR dress that was stolen...  That does seem a little odd.

I am sure it will work out for you getting a new one!

Yes, she is going to call NYC consignment shops that sell wedding gowns, monitor craigslist, and other sites. And we already talked about filing a police report. And my fiance is a lawyer so with his help I'm not afraid to ask her to do everything possible to make sure I have a dress.

"And we already talked about filing a police report."

So she didn't file a police report right when she discovered it had been stolen? I could be wrong but I was under the impression that this should be done immediately. It seems a bit weird to discover something was stolen and then not contact the police. Good luck, I am keeping my fingers crossed for you!

I would bet that someone did see your dress and thought that it was amazing - so amazing that they offered more money to buy it off the rack.  It sounds like it was "stolen" by someone who bought it from the designer and she doesn't want you to figure it out, so she's making you a new one, which won't be ready as early as the original would have been.

Hmmm fishy fishy, I agree. What thief steals a wedding dress? She DIDN'T file a report? I'd get one filed asap. Make sure you have some proof. And make sure she DOES make you that dress. I'd get a contract going or something.

It doesn't hurt to have your butt covered. But it's great that she'll make you one! Show us pics =]

    An update!

Well, on Sunday, 24 hours after she said it was stolen, my sister came over and we began looking for inspiration for a new dress. We hopped over to a salon to try on other dresses to help me narrow down what I want in a new dress.

While we were there, the seamstress left me a message which I promptly listened to in the car.

<span style="text-decoration: underline;">She found the dress. In her middle room where she keeps her fabrics. I gave it to her in an archival box, not a garment bag so that confused her and she didn't remember where she had put it, for several days.

Anyway, after I tell everyone, my mother and fiance insist we pick up the dress and get a full refund of the deposit I had given her.

Once I get on the phone with her I thank her for finding the dress and tell her that we are going to pick it up tonight with a refund in cash. She is completely understanding and apologetic. It was awkward, but I told her, which I believe, the universe does not want you working on the dress, so let's all move on.

So, looking for a great seamstress for dress alterations in the NYC, Westchester, or Long Island area. Any suggestions?

    Wow.

A "thief came in and stole it" to "i misplaced it".What a stretch. At least she was honest...? I can't say I'm surprised--out of hundreds of white frocks in an apartment, I'm sure they all look the samea t some point

Definitely a good thing she isn't working on it. Good luck finding a new seamstress.

Wow, what a stressful situation.  I'm glad you got your dress back, after all that drama.  I did think it sound really strange that of all the dresses she had, yours would have been the only one that was stolen.  I'm surprised that she wouldn't look through her entire studio before she assumed your dress had been stolen.

Oh well, I guess all's well that ends well.  At least you got your dress back!

Yes thank you all for your support. I honestly don't know if she was going to give it to someone or just honestly lost her mind for a weekend, but I am glad someone else is going to work on it and really no damages were done. Except major emotional distress.

That is so weird! So she never got robbed at all and just made it up? Definitely pick up the dress! I am using Ellen's Couture on the UWS of Manhattan. My wedding is in October but so far she seems great and I like the way she works.

Yeah, totally agree. Very strange and I'm glad you are taking it elsewhere. Sounds to me like something was up and it didn't work out---so she fessed up to "finding it". Personally, I would be very suspicious if she hadn't filed a police report right away--I mean really, someone supposedly broke into her home! Good thinking to move on. ::whew::

I am really glad you got your dress back and I am really glad she was honest with you in this situation - I realize it must have been hard for her but I don't really see how she could have come up with that situation in the first place!

Yes, it is good because once she found it she could have stuck to her old story to avoid embarrassment, but she did the right thing by letting me know. I am shaken but relieved it is over.
