- Wedding: November 2012
So this happened 3 weeks ago, but I have been on holiday and didn’t really want to think about it too much so didn’t want to post it on WeddingBee.
Anyway I want to share what has happened, mainly for some moral support!
You may have seen me post my ring pics in other threads, and to those of you who complimented it, thank you 🙂 I love (loved?) my ring so much until the fateful day 3 weeks ago when my Fiance took it to get appraised.
We went to a reputable, independent appraiser who our friends have been to in the past. Fiance took the paperwork that the shop he bought the ring from gave him, which detailed it’s cut, colour, clarity etc.
The clarity was stated to be VS1. So our appraiser looks at the diamond under his little eyeglass and pulls it away and says “whoa! That is NOT a VS1! This diamond is horribly included.”
Whoa. Needless to say my Fiance was crushed. He was told that the centre stone, whose colour and everything else matched up to the certificate we got, was not a VS1, but an I1. He then valued it and it was worth less than what Fiance paid.
Fiance is fuming by this stage and calls up the shop (he bought it overseas but luckily, they also have a store in our city) and tells them what has happened and that he is not a happy chappy. The guy on the phone suddenly starts apologising profusely. “There was a mix up at the shop! There have been 3 others call us this week with the same problem! Workshop problem! Unintentional! Please bring it in and we will replace the diamond asap!!”
Well, to summerise the rest of the story quickly for ya’ll, we took the ring in and the guy in the shop looks at it under his eye glass and immediately says “that’s not your diamond. I’m so sorry.”
I’m inclined to believe that they did try and rip us off, but got caught, realised that my Fiance is in the defence forces (all his buddies buy from this particular store and they know their business is going to suffer terribly if the boys all start taking their business elsewhere) and now are trying to make up stories about workshop problems. Yeah right.
However, they could have just denied or blamed us for swapping the diamond so at the end of the day, we probably couldn’t have hoped for a better outcome. Who knows… maybe it was a mistake? Hmmm…
Anyway, they’re fixing the problem and my ring is due to be picked up tomorrow with its new diamond. I can’t wait till it’s back on my finger.
Meanwhile – the strange part is that a lot of my FI’s buddies have bought from this store (it’s a family run store) before and all of them have had the stones checked by an independant party. No one has ever had this problem before. Most people have actually ended up with BETTER diamonds than they paid for. So maybe we just got unlucky??
Anyway, moral of the story is, get your diamonds independently checked because you never know… I have since found out this exact same situation happened with the first ring my dad bought my mum. Crazy.
Thanks for reading Bees. I know it’s long! Just had to finally share what had happened and again, I can’t WAIT to get my ring back tomorrow. We will be taking it straight back to our appraiser that’s for sure. Finger’s crossed everything turns out okay… 🙂
(BTW – I just want to point out that I’m not dissing I1 stones. I actually thought my stone was beautiful. It sparkled and I thought it was perfect. I probably wouldn’t have known that it wasn’t a VS1, except for the fact that on close inspection I could see spots in it… But Fiance did not pay for a I1. He deserves his moneys worth and deserves to get the stone he chose.)
