Well, I never posted it on here, and I was just looking back on some photos and thought that maybe it might be fun to relive it again by posting it… so without further ado, here’s my official engagement story and some pictures to go along with it 🙂
Let me just tell you all that I was totally suprised! Even though when we went to Benihana’s the week before and they told me to make a wish at the birthday candle, I wished he would ask me to marry him, but I NEVER thought it would actually happen! Especially while we were at Disneyland! We had been talking about getting a ring (which I already had picked out) but we knew we didn’t have the thousands of dollars that an engagement ring costs… so as far as I was concerned it was going to be a long while before I saw anything shiny. I’m pretty sure that setup was all part of the scheme…
On our way down to Disneyland for my birthday, FI mentions that we need to see my dad while we’re in town, and that we should have dinner with them Saturday night. So I called up my dad to see what he was up to, and if he wanted to meet up at the Red Robin near his house (since I had a coupon, of course). He agreed and so we made the drive up there. Dinner went well, I got my favorite burger and ate way too many fries, and then my dad mentions that he needs to meet us for dinner tomorrow night too. I was confused and wondering why, but I did notice that there wasn’t a birthday card or anything for me, so I figured it was to bring my card down. Okay, so we agreed to the House of Blues on Sunday night, and that we would figure out the details the next day.
We hadn’t been eating really well the whole weekend because of trying to schedule these meals, and I kept getting huge hunger headaches in the afternoons. So on Sunday I got my headache right before we were going to meet up with my dad, and we still had like a half hour to wait before he was supposed to be there, and then probably another hour before we would actually be eating. So FI offered to go back into the park and get me a coke while I waited near the loading zone. Let me tell you, that was the longest trip to get a coke EVER. I’m pretty sure he was gone for like three hours (of course he wasn’t, but it was cold out and I wasn’t feeling well, so it felt like forever!). When he returned, he had a bag of pink cotton candy. He said he couldn’t find a coke nearby and so he got the cotton candy instead, and that it took him so long because he got caught in the parade traffic. Oh, totally understandable. Those parades can be quite a nuisance when you’re trying to get somewhere. He tore open the bag for me and handed me the cotton candy, and I couldn’t help but hope there was something sparkly inside the bag…. but, I looked around in there and didn’t see anything. Shoot.
So then we met up with my dad and my stepmom and managed to get all the way down to the House of Blues for dinner. I noticed that my dad and Irma were all dressed up, while we were in amusement park clothes… I questioned it, but then realized that this was my special birthday dinner and we were going to the House of Blues, so it was kind of appropriate. During dinner, dad handed me my birthday card and I opened it and found $50 to the cheesecake factory inside! Yay! We were all happy and taking pictures and everything was great. FI mentioned that we needed to go get a seat for the fireworks show and that we should say bye to dad and stepmom. I looked at my watch and realized it was only 7pm. The fireworks show doesn’t start until 9:35.. why did we have to go so early? FI said because he wanted to sit right in front of the castle (which is not my favorite place to see the fireworks, but I thought I’d humor him), so we started walking away from Downtown Disney. On the way out, I noticed that my dad was still carrying a gift bag. I asked him if the bag was a new man purse (because I didn’t know how to ask without seeming greedy, which I’m not, I was just curious), and he said it was my stepmom’s and handed her the bag. I turned to FI to ask him about it and he told me that they had been talking and they accidentally got me the wrong gift. I couldn’t imagine why someone would bring the wrong gift all the way from the car and through dinner and all that, but then again, sometimes weird stuff happens (it is my dad after all).
I expected to walk my dad all the way to the bus to get back to their car, but instead at the last minute they shout “bye!” and walk into a sunglasses store. I couldn’t believe it! I’m not going to see them in who knows how long and that’s the goodbye?! How strange! After talking to FI about it on the way back into Disneyland, I decided that it was actually pretty normal for something like that to happen, because sometimes my dad and stepmom are just plain weird.
So we finally make it to the front of the castle and have a seat. FI has to use the restroom, so he takes off again for a little bit. When he came back, I again was hoping he had something sparkly with him, but nope, not this time either. There isn’t anything wrong with wishful thinking right? He tells me to go look around the shops while we were waiting, because last time it was a lot of fun. I hesitated because I didn’t really want to buy anything, but eventually agreed and took a stroll through the shops. When I got back there was only a few minutes left before the fireworks show was supposed to start and it started to drizzle. I was worried that they might cancel the fireworks show again, but I wasn’t really all that stressed about it.
Luckily, the weather picked up and the fireworks started! FI asked me to tell him when the finale was happening because he wanted to take a picture. I told him that he would miss the best part trying to take a picture because it probably wouldn’t come out anyway. He said still, he wanted to try. So I agreed to tell him when the finale was. We’re just sitting there enjoying the fireworks when he asks, “is this the finale?” “Nope,” I reply. Two minutes later, “is this the finale?” “Not yet,” I say. The third time he asks, “Is this the finale?” I say, “Yep, this is the finale,” and he pulls his phone out of his pocket and hands it to the lady sitting behind us! What?! “FI, what are you doing?!” was all that was going through my head, and then he started to stand up. Everyone else was sitting of course, so I was reluctant to stand up, but at the same time it is the end of the fireworks and its kind of a pain to get out of the area. So I stand up, and at that moment he gets down on one knee and pulls a ring out of his chest pocket!!
I couldn’t even hear the words he was saying to me because I was so caught off guard! I was totally taken in by this amazing man down on his knee in front of me asking me to spend the rest of my life with him. I was totally overwhelmed with love and adoration. Of course I said “yes” and he got back up from in front of me. It was only then that I realized what had just happened.
He was SO shaky and full of tears and so amazingly cute that I couldn’t help but start crying myself. This moment couldn’t have been more perfect! As the people started clearing out of the area, someone came over and said “Congratulations!” and everyone else came into view. The lady sitting behind us had been commissioned to take the photos of the whole event, and so we turned to smile for her.
When she handed the phone back to FI, he said to me, ” and your dad and stepmom are waiting for us in Downtown Disney..” and that’s when I fell apart. I immediately scanned the area for somewhere to sit down. My dad knew? How in the world? And then he explained it all to me while I looked at him through teary eyes. He wanted to meet my dad for dinner so he could ask him permission before he asked to marry me. He did it when I went to the restroom at the restaurant. My dad and stepmom came back with the gift bag for celebration and for congratulations. They bought us drinks at the Uva bar afterward. He bought the ring when he went to get me cotton candy, and he had the whole thing planned out the whole time. It was only coincidental that I was hoping he’d bring me something shiny!
This ring he proposed with was a mickey mouse ring- but it was a temporary… and I know have my big beautiful sparkly he’s always wanted to give me, and my mickey mouse ring is still very dear to my heart 🙂
