I will preface this by saying no, I’m not sponsoring, nor am I being sponsored by anyone, nor am I saying this is a viable option for everyone. Just wanted to share my experiences so far, since I know this is a highly debated diet protocol.
I first learned about it when my local news did a piece on it. I contacted the woman who was featured in the piece through facebook, and learned that she was getting the homeopathic drops through officialhcgdiet.com. I wanted to do my research, so I spent about a week looking up any information I could (I even posted a thread on here looking for people who had tried it and what their experiences were). hCG stands for “Human Chorionic Gonadotropin” which is a hormone found in the urine of pregnant women. The hormone is designed to use the fat reserves of the mother to feed the child, especially in times of starvation (it feeds off the fat reserves of the mother), and is used for diet purposes to mobilize the fat stored in the abdomen and hips. The protocol is based on Dr. Simeon’s “Pounds and Inches” book (which is now available online).
The normal protocol is supposed to last 21-25 days or so (no less than 2 weeks, no more than 45). Knowing myself and my willpower however, I chose the 2 week plan. The first 2 days are called “load days” and you’re supposed to basically gorge yourself as much as possible to activate your fat reserves, so that you can lose more wait while on the protocol (this is explained in the book). Truthfully, I thought I was going to eat EVERYTHING and was so full that I didn’t eat nearly as much as I thought I could! But who will complain about binging on oreos, ice cream, and cereal for 2 days?
After the load days, you are reduce to a 500 calorie diet (this is the part where people freak out). Basically the diet is this: water, tea, coffee, or Zevia in the morning. A piece of fruit or melba toast twice a day as a snack, and 4oz. of meat with salad/veggies for lunch and dinner. Truthfully, I was very hungry for the first 2 or 3 days and was chugging water and peeing every 45 minutes. But once I learned a schedule and started creating my own recipes, it became very doable. Last Monday and Tuesday were my load days, and I started the VCLD (very low calorie diet) on Wednesday. Since then I’ve lost 8.3 pounds (in 4 days). I’m not hungry, I’m not tired, I feel great, and I can already see the results.
What will happen when I go off the diet? I’m sure it will be tempting to start eating brownies and whatnot again – but it really has changed the way I think about food now. I’ve learned that I like peppers and lots of other veggies I was too scared to try, and I’ve basically learned how to cook now that I”m the one preparing my meals from scratch, and it’s easier to stick to the protocol when I prepare my meals in advance. The jury is still out on whether or not the hCG drops are real or just a placebo affect. Either way, I’m still taking them. The way I see it – even if they are placebo, I’m still gaining knowledge and being healthier from this experience, so I don’t see it as a waste.
Again, this thread is not an invitation to discuss the merits/shortfalls of the protocol – just wanted to share my experience so far.
