... regarding her husband's birthday. My fiance and "Steve" are best friends. Sometimes Steve's wife is completely out of line. I'd like to share this with you all. Kinda reminds me of that email from the FMIL to the bride that went around recently . Please keep in mind that this woman is a SAHM, this pair is very well off, and my fiance travels for a living and is gone 45 weeks of the year. We see each other once a week.
Hello everyone!!
So I was thinking about Steve’s birthday... And something he always asks for in general is TIME. So I thought we could all work together and give him that! He always struggles with material things... And never knows what he wants... But I know he will love the gift of time! What does that mean? Let me share some ideas. So there is always a list of to dos for Steve to work on, and some frustrations that he never is able to get everything done (not that we aren't crazy busy in general!)
Here are my ideas:
His CAR! His car completed would be amazing. I could have Steve make up a list of things he needs to do to his car... Act like I want him to write it down to get more organized... Then leave for the day or overnight so you can help work on it!
(My fiancé): he misses u!! One amazing thing u could do is surprise him one day (I will help set this up) come over an hang out... And put his stereo/remote start back in his car
(Another Friend): I need help moving couches around. One out of the basement.. One down in the basement.. This in turn will free up some much needed garage space. Could we try to do this before Friday?! Bob… one day on your way home?? I know.. Short notice.
(Steve’s parents): any yard work/ fall clean up stuff would be awesome. Also there is a build up of dirt/grass around the tree in back. I woud like to make a butterfly garden fr him there. That would tie into my present of a year pass to the botanical garden. So for this garden we would need dirt... Butterfly bushes/bright color flowers/ and milk weed. He would love this!
In general: garage clean up. After couches r moved around.
If these things were done I know it would take a lot of stress off his shoulders!! He would love it.
Thanks all!!! Let me know if u guys have any others ideas!
My mind is still boggled about how she'd think Steve would like manual labor and house hold chores from his friends for his birthday.
I'd let her know that my idea is a nice card and maybe a damn watch or something.
These sound like things SHE'D like done, lol. Does her husband REALLY want a butterfly garden?? mhmm.
Wow. It sounds like she wants some major house chores done rather than have her husbands friends over for some real quality time. Like, have a beer, or eat some dinner and relax.
AAAAGH! It's like a task list and registry all rolled into one....for a birthday?!? My mind has been boggled.
ETA--I love how the "task" for your fiance starts out, "just hang out" and ends "Oh yeah and fix his car too."
I guess I might kind of see how, espeically since he is gone a lot, this mght make sense in her head but the going from her head to a mass email is a little crazy.
Ha! We are doing this for my FI's dad's birthday present, on his yacht, but we are family! I couldn't imagine asking friends to do this!! Cray cray!
ETA: Defnitely the woman version of the "here honey I got you a screwdriver for your birthday" gift from the BF/Hub/FI!
Yeah these are all presents to herself, sorry. Reminds me of this:

BA HA HA! LOVE IT! You know, my yard needs some work, and my birthday is also coming up...thanks for the tip! :P
Ugh. I'd probably just fire back a quick, "thanks for the advice" and then get the guy whatever I wanted.
I felt like she was kind of on the right track with the install the car stereo thing - since they've got money, maybe tangible gifts aren't the best.
but then...it turned into "I need some couches moved around" --- uhh....yeah, no.
Did people actually ASK her what Steve wanted?
@daydreamwanderer: I had the same thought.
I think my response would be...'I think Steve would LOVE it if you got off your butt and surprised him with all you accomplished by yourself! Whaddya think?'
She has some nerve.
The car thing sounds absoletly amazing. The chores- hell no. But seriously, time spent working on cars, for men is a great idea.
Whoah! I agree, at first it wasn't that bad, but then it quickly turned!
Wouldn't we all like time to get done everything that needs to be completed? Whatevs.
I don't think she truly has any idea of how inappropriate it is to ask for these "gifts". I've never seen such a thing in my life. It's like asking good friends to help you move. Ugh!
I don't know why she doesn't just hire a handyman as a gift for him. Or pay his friends to help him out as the gift itself. Nothing wrong with that. Then his friends can bring him good stuff, like booze and cake. lol
OMG. omg. omg!! NO way. There are so many things wrong about this. A normal way to celebrate someone's birthday is to....oh, I don't know....throw a party?!?! Not unabashedly demand free labor. I would have a lot of fun thinking up responses to this.
If I were his friend, I think I'd be surprising Steve with a weekend out of town to get away from this nutjob.
My fiancé): he misses u!! One amazing thing u could do is surprise him one day (I will help set this up) come over an hang out... And put his stereo/remote start back in his car
LOL!!!!! I love how she says he misses you! Come over to hang out AND help with shit! haha
WTH?! This is ridiculous! I wonder what is going through all the recipients mind as they read this?! I would be mortified. Yes my DH works a lot of hours and would love free time especially from some chores, but guess what it's life! Get the eff over it, we all have to. Plus and I actually would say something to the wife about it if it were one of my friends, though I'm sure it's bc she wants it done and not junk lying around, but you don't mess with a mans car. He may have a list but sometimes the guy working on the car themselves is a pure joy and stress relief to them! I would never have someone else finish DH car...NEVER. I wonder if people will actually respond to this?
I'd be a Class A biatch and e-mail her back the number of a local mover, contractor and goodwill pickup.
ETA: well, maybe not for real. Just in my mind. Perhaps a picture of a watch instead. :)
@PutABirdOnIt: EXACTLY! Hire a handyman. That'd be a great gift. Then invite the friends over to celebrate with beer and cake.
@KristenGotMarried: Please please keep us posted on this! I was super depressed until I read this. Would love to know if any of Steve's friends actually do any of this!
I actually just “lol’ed” when I read this. Who the f*ck does this chick think she is?! I agree with the PP’s, it sounds like more of a gift for herself than her over extended husband. I’d get “Steve” a gift card and call it a day.
As for the loving wife, maybe a “Common Sense for Dummies” book would be in order.
I cannot stop laughing at this. "My fiance's birthday is coming up so everyone needs to come over and move my couches and do my yardwork!" LMAO!
@highwire: YES! totally thought of that same bachelor party email as soon as I read this also. she isn't QUITE as ridiculous as the fiancee about the bach party, but definitely a similar tone...
Honestly - I don't find it that bad. If these people are well off, they probably don't need material things.
How is this all that different from a group of friends getting together and setting up a plan to make dinners and help with some stuff around the house to help de-stress friends who are new parents or who lost a loved one or something?
IDK - I just don't find this to be any where near as big of a deal as you all are making it.
@KristenGotMarried: I'd be like....uh...you are a SAHM...you move the damn couch and do the yard work. WTF.
