I just got back from my first hair trial.  I was so hoping I was only going to have one.  I went in with a few pics I pulled off the computer, and she said no problem.  But, what I ended up with is not what I was hoping for.  I think its kinda cool tho.  I thought for a second...maybe this will do.  BUT I really want to try  to get the look I'm going for which is really just a messy bun...I have no idea how we ended up with what I got.  I don't know... am I being to picky? Heres my inspiration photo, followed by what I got..

Oh, bummer!  It didn't quite turn out like the inspiration photo (I actually voted for that one a while back).  I'm wondering if that style your hoping for  might be difficult to achieve since your hair textures are probably different.  It almost looks as if the "model" may have a natural curl or perm.  Best of luck!!

No, that's so different, and I hope I'm not overstepping, but that side shot looks like she forgot to look at it....

I love that inspiration pic and have it saved myself as a top fave. Did she attempt to curl your hair at all?

Well, she said that I have a lot of hair, so I'll just end up with one ginormous bun the other way.  She was very very nice and said we'll try again next week.  I see kinda what she's saying about my massive amounts of hair, but I was in a wedding last year when I had longer hair and my hair was in a bun for that.  And it wasn't super size bun.  So fingers crossed it goes better next week.  I was just so excited and I feel....sad.

I think you should be able to change things and ask for what you want - that's why you do trials!

On the other hand, you have to remember that it's very difficult for a stylist to exactly replicate a specific and intricate style.  Hair length, texture, and thickness will impact that, if nothng else.

By all means, go back again, but it's unlikely to look exactly like the picture.  And that's ok, as long as she gives you something you like ... maybe better!

Can you bring any other pics for her>  I know I brought half a dozen to show her things I liked, and she kind of blended those elements into a style that worked with my hair and face shape.

Looks like you may have too much hair to pull off the look in your inspiration pic... honestly, it doesn't look much like what you were hoping for.  Frown

Just be sure you explain to her that you like the definition in your inspiration picture and that she should probably curl your hair before she puts it up to get the desired look.  Your bun will probably not be as small as your inspiraiton picture, but it should look more put together than I think your stylist did.

Maybe you can get a hair cut that would ease some of the burden in the bun?

Yea . . . she made it kind of look like a nest!  I agree with the girl above, I wonder if you have too much hair to match the picture nicely.

I have a lot of hair too... but whenever I've had my hair professionally styled into any kind of updo they actually "hide" some of my hair by tightly twisting it and wrapping it into a small bun that is covered up by whatever hairstyle I'm getting (that way they don't have to even bother styling that section of my hair, it just gets hidden underneath).  I suggest trying a different stylist... I'm not sure this one really understands your vision.  I also worry that the style she actually gave you might fall out after an hour or two.  Did you leave it like that for a few hours after you got your hair done to see how it held up?

@mcnetn3 I was a little curious as to why she wasn't curling it, or teasing it, or anything.  Next week I'm going to be more vocal about it.

I know my hair won't look exactly like the photo, but I'd like something close or maybe in the same ball park.

HA LadyGoodman, it totally looks like a nest!!!  Or a basket.  Now I'm kinda getting a kick out of my do!  Not that I'll be wearing it that way for the wedding...but its good for a laugh!!

I think I'll have to bring in more pics to go by and possibly cut my hair.  Its funny, the only reason I haven't cut it and only got a trim last month was because everybody kept saying not to cut it shorter until after the wedding.  humph!  I shoulda come to the hive before my trim a month ago!!

I really really really don't suggest getting your hair "thinned" out.  I've seen disasterous results.  Especially if you have straight hair.

That pic is one of my top inspiration pics as well! I agree that your hair trial doesn't match the picture. I'd ask her why it didn't look the same and see if there's any other things she can do differently next time (like hiding the hair, as another poster suggested).

Er... yeah. If you're not happy, then I'm glad you're going for a second trial. I would have specific things about your first trial that you can point out as being different from your inspiration photo. I would agree that the trial hair was lacking some of the delicateness of the inspiration photo..

    Don't worry! It'll get there!!! :-)

I think you're being totally reasonable - you shouldn't feel in any way like you are settling on your wedding day hair.

I hope your next trial is more successful!

You're not being picky... the back doesn't really resemble the back of your inspiration photo at all. There is too much hair just swooping right to left at the top of the bun. I think you need to either have a talk with your stylist or look for a new one. But don't be shy about telling your stylist which specific parts you don't like. You really don't want to look back at these pictures and wince!

So weird we both have the exact same inspiration picture... that's exactly what I'm going for. I have some other similar pictures if you are interested send me a message, they have side and back views too. I don't know if we are going for the exact same style but you can look at them and maybe it will help the stylist understand better? I'm sorry but the picture doesn't quite look like the inspiration. If it were me I would tell them how you feel and maybe they can try again. But if you have longer hair it might be difficult for them... or try a different stylist?

I don't think you're being too picky as it doesn't really resemble your inspiration THAT much, but with that being said I think it's difficult for a stylist to EXACTLY replicate an inspiration photo (because your hair maybe be completely different that the "models" hair).

I'd either ask her to try again or find someone else.

You're hair inspiration picture is awesome.  It was one of mine too (I ended up doing a half up do though).  I don't think you're being too picky at all.  The style she did wasn't exactly what you had in mind, don't feel bad about it.  Hair is important on your wedding day, you wanna look perfect.  I'd suggest trying again.  It can't hurt.

Those styles look TOTALLY different. You DO have a lot of hair though so maybe you should find some more pics of a similar style with a bigger bun?

I also agree with a previous poster that I think the stylist went about creating the style the wrong way. She probably needed to take the majority of your hair and twist it into a tight bun...secure that. THEN create the "messiness" with the remaining hair by layering and pinning it over the top of the bun if that makes sense.

Nope, not too picky.  Definitely not like your inspiration pic.  Is there any reason you have to go with the same stylist?  I know I had a disastrous hair trial with one person and I just started fresh with someone else.  Judging by the pic, it really doesn't look like the person who did that is capable of creationg  the style you want.  Also, when you say you didn't like it, they may get nervous or offended and do worse next time.

I agree, I don't think the stylist you used can actually do that hair style (otherwise your trial do would have been a little closer to the actual picture).  Does that stylist do updo's a lot?  From what I've heard there are stylists who are really good at cutting hair and there are stylists who are really good at styling hair (like doing up do's) but sometimes the people who cut your hair really well aren't always the people who will be able to style your hair really well.

I LOVE my hair dresser.  She moved an hour & 15 minutes away but I actually make the drive because I love how she cuts my hair and can't find another hair dresser in my area who is that good.  I am NOT using her on my wedding day because she isn't that great with updo's.  She even suggested a couple other stylists locally who she thought I should use instead.

I would really start looking for someone new rather than trying to explain to her what you wanted.  She should have been able to look at your pictures and know exactly what you wanted.  Start asking around to see if you can find someone in your area who is known for amazing up do's.

Those look like two different styles. You are not being picky at all! It looks like your stylist had some problem with the length, weight or texture of your hair because there are huge sections that are just there...blah. I would go back for a re-do and perhaps ask for a different stylist (one who is familiar with your hair type). Hopefully you don't have to pay again (but may need to tip the new stylist).

You do have a lot of hair...if it is long and thick it could be hard to pull off. I went in for my trial earlier this week and I had to ditch some of my inspirations because it just wasn't going to work with my hair. My hairstylist did work with me though until I was happy with the end result. The first trial is always tricky because they don't know your hair or how easy it is to work with. I am sure you will end up happy in the end though!

@MaggieGirl I asked around and someone suggested that I go to this salon.  They have 2 people that do up do's.  Its such a cute salon, i was sure everything was going to be fine.  This hair thing has really become an issue.  THe place I go to for my usual hair maintenance, one of my maids refuses to go to.  She had her hair trial there with one women ( who I know not to go to for an updo) and she was horrified!  She refuses to ever step foot in that place.  My hair lady and owner of the shop is awesome...but we can't go there.  Another place THat ended up doing that friends hair and another friends hair for their weddings...is also being boycotted. That story is long and complicated, but in short its because my friend was fired from there...(or layed off) for no reason. SO THATS scratched off the list.  I live in a small town and I'm running out of options.

I do have a ton of hair, but I had it in a bun type thing for a friends wedding last year and my hair was longer then, so I know it can happen.

ALSO....i thought it was weird that during my hair trial, she never teases my hair or curled it or did anything to give it volume... Does that seem right to anyone?

I'm going back next wednesday, because I told her that the look she gave me wasn't exactly what I had in mind, and I think she knew she messed up too, by some of her comments.  Although most of the comments were blaming my hair.  I know I can't get exactly the style in the pic....but we can at least AIM for a bun, not a nest (LOL). Heres my hair length and then a pic of my hair in a bun ....

Who did the bun in the picture, can you go to that salon? Also, if you really like the salon owner at your normal salon, can you just ask her to do your hair and your BMs for the wedding and request that the other stylist is not involved? I don'T know how many people want to get their hair done, if this is even an option but it would let you get someone who knows how to handle your hair and insure no one gets the bad stylist.

yeah, hair trials are good, because i dont think you would have been happy with first "do".

from experience (i am an "encore") PLEASE be firm with the gal. i wasnt and my hair was just a hot mess!!! i was too scared to say anything. as i have gotten older (37) i have learned to speak up when necessary. this is one of those times! we spend sooo much time looking for the perfect dress, location, make up, etc..dont let this one thing get in the way of your day! making sure you get what you want..within reason.. does NOT make a BRIDEZILLA!!!

i am going to get off the soapbox now, pretty high up here and i afraid of heights!Wink

i hope i dont sound bitchy, i just learned ALOT from the first go around.

@joeysgal  yeah, I'm totally surprised I told her it wasn't what I wanted.  I'm so glad I did that.  Hopefully next week I'll be even MORE vocal about what I want.  There were a few things I should have spoken up about from the beginning of this trial...but thought she knew what she was doing.  Now I know.  You can stand on the that soapbox as long as you'd like.  I appreciate the opinions!!

I actually don’t think the length of your hair is the problem, its the fact that your hair is stick straight and the inspiration model's is a very tight curl. You can't get realistic looking curls, texture, and volume like that with a curling iron. Of course, if your stylist had actually USED a curling iron, it might look a lot closer ;o). Basically, the only way to get your hair to look like that would be if your hair is naturally curly. And I’m willing to bet that even when you go back to the stylist, it still isn’t going to be what you want.

Did your stylist ever mention that the inspiration pic hair is a totally different texture from yours and that it might cause problems? A good stylist should be able to instantly tell if a hair style will work or not. My stylist immediately dismissed several of my inspiration ideas because she knew it would never work and I wouldn't be happy. Instead she told me what would work based on my hair and she was totally right. Your picture of your hair in that bun looks really good, so why not go for something closer to that?
