@Lindsay12.31.2010: THANKS! We originally thought that the pink stones were sapphires, but when the jeweler heat tested them, they turned purple...meaning they had evolved to rubies. The stone I had replaced was a pink one, and we used a pink sapphire .
I don't know why the one diamond looks so yellow in the pics. Can't see the yellow in person.
@KatyElle: YEP! ALL of them! My jeweler LOVED this ring. Knowing my grandmother, I actually assumed the ring was fake. It was one of those happy surprises.
I have no idea of the monetary value...the repair was $600.00 and the jeweler said it was "worth it" to fix...that's all I know.
I only met my grandmother once when I was 12, and she wasn't too pleasant...but I thank her for my nice ring!
That is so beyond cool! So, wait....there is a screw under it and you can use it to take out the sapphire???????????????????????????????
You must explain further with words and pictures, please!!??!!!
@mammamia: That's right! Not just the sapphire, it take out the row of diamonds as well. Here are a couple pics showing the scew underneath:
Oh, and I had him add a special glue to the screw so it wouldn't come apart "by accident."
If that thing cost $600 to fix and it was worth it based on the value (I assume s/he meant monetary and not just sentimental) of the ring, sounds to me like you need to get it appraised and insured!
@SandyDollHair: Man is it big, but it's so pretty. I love how the center stone just pops.
@jumpthegun: I was thinking the same thing! I really should have had him appraise it.
Thanks, guys...
I agree with the other posters who say you should get it appraised. That ring is AMAZING. When you aren't wearing it, you might consider putting it in some type of a safe and/or safe deposit box at the bank, if you haven't already decided on that. I'm not an expert, but I have a feeling your ring's worth way more than might be expected. Just stunning!
Oooh, that's gorgeous. Hang on to it! x
I was all set to wear it today but now a friend has asked me to help her move a sofa...GAH!! lolll
@SandyDollHair: Gosh I just LOVE that ring! Sighhhhh.
You're so lucky ;)
Sapphires evolve into rubies!? That is way cool. I've also never heard of a puzzle ring. You should totally get it appraised!

Seven months ago, I took my grandmother's ring to the jeweler to get a stone replaced and to have it cleaned. It took forever to get it back, but today was the day!!
The centre stone is a blue sapphire, then a row of diamonds and then a row of pink rubies. It's a "puzzle" ring. There is a screw under the basket that let's you take out the sapphire and diamonds to put something else in. All the stones are old miner's cut.
I don't usually wear stuff this ornate, but "Tis the season," right??
