and my laptop with ALL the wedding stuff was taken :-(

(i was backing it up on Mozy online, so hopefully everything is there, i haven't checked yet).

it SUCKS!  i wasn't having the best day to begin with, and then came home to broken glass and  mess all over.  but i am so glad they did not hurt the dogs (looks like they tried to distract them with their treats that are on a table by the door -- knowing my friendly dogs, they were probably like, oh thank you, never mind you broke the window to get in...). UGH. i am so creeped out.  fortunately for us we just don't really have anything valuable besides the computer -- so this wasn't the best house to break into....

Oh no! I would be so scared. I'm just glad everything is ok, no one being harmed. What wedding stuff was taken- stuff on the computer? Or physical stuff? ((HUGS))

The same thing happend to me in Sept. Although they got my laptop, camera, and ipod. It's creepy knowing a stranger was in your house. I never knew how much stuff I had saved wedding wise on my computer until it was gone :-(

i feel you it happen to me once when we used to live in an apartment and felt so horrible... i advice to you is the same one my best friend gave me... put an alarm system... when i bought my house i put an alarm system the second day with SAFEHOME company... the system was free and i only pay $30 monthly...

1 month living the house we had somebody trying to break in while we were sleeping, the alarm went off, and the police was in out house in less than 3 minutes... it was scary but i dont want to imagine what will it happen if we didnt had the alarm

How scary! The important thing though, is that your dogs are there and safe... You can always replace the computer.

So sorry this happened to you!

excatly - the computer is totally replaceable of course, and THANK GOD they didn't do anything to "neutralize" the dogs - i've heard of thieves just giving them poison.  i am also glad they didn't mess around with the broken glass on the ground and hurt their paws!  eek.

i do feel really creeped out and would love to get an alarm - but we're renting and i don't think the owner would go for it.  but we're moving this summer and that will be a big criterion for me now!!!!  i also would love not to live on the first floor, but with dogs it is so much more convenient. but boy, it was SO easy for them to just break a window, and since we have a fenced in backyard, no one could see them.  i'm afraid they may have been casing out the place, which is even more creepy -- i am usually home all day and was only out for a couple hours.

Make sure all of your credit cards are accounted for and any credit card bills.  If you notice anything suspicious make sure to report that to the police.  I know it sounds silly, but also check your credit history report if something comes up because you never know about ID Theft if someone stole mail possibly laying around.

I'm so glad you are okay and your dogs are fine.  I would feel the same way about  my little pup!

Do you possibly have the serial number for your computer?  If so, make sure you get that to the police as soon as possible.  Depending on who stole it, they may or may not try to pawn it.  If your police department has access to pawn record databases then they might be able to locate the laptop if it's ever pawned.

Hope this helps and I'm really sorry this happened to you.  Very crummy and I hope your sense of security in your home comes back ASAP!

So scary, I'm so sorry this happened!

You could always talk to your landlord, it doesn't hurt to let them know what happened and see what their thoughts are on getting an alarm.

I'm sorry to hear that goodheart! We were broken into a few weeks ago as well. They took DH's laptop plus another old one we had and a few other bits and pieces. Worst thing was the video camera WITH OUR WEDDING VIDEO STILL ON IT. Our dogs were also unharmed, thank goodness. I really feel your pain, it's such a horrible feeling!!!

that sucks that this is such a common experience! ugh.

@ curlysue -- thank you so much for all the tips!  that was the first thing i checked on but this thief must not have wanted to mess with anything traceable -- there were some checkbooks left on the ground on top of the mess, and he didn't take any of our IDs etc (that are in conveniently labeled files...).  but i have alerted my banks and will get my annual credit report in about 2 weeks to check. oh, and the officer who responded also mentioned the serial number.  i was able to get it from Dell and give it to the officer.  actually, the only thing we actually think was taken was the laptop, even though there was a digital camera and a Wii about a foot away! weird!

@ llindy -- interestingly, our landlord posted something on facebook about the break in and her friends have all recommended getting an alarm system and had stories about how it deterred burglars -- since the advice is coming from her friends, perhaps it will happen!

thank you everyone!! i am the type of person who feels much better after getting things off my chest, so i've been talking to friends and family all day -- it really does seem like alot of people have had break ins, and many have lost far more valuable things than us.  actually, when i had asked my mother in law if i could borrow any of her jewelry for the wedding, she told me it had ALL been stolen in a break in =(

my husband is being awesome and will stay home from work tomorrow to help mefeel safe and to deal with the window people and the insurance claim. thank goodness for him, i wouldnt have dealt with it very well alone :-(

Oh, wow! that's really scary! I'm sorry that happend! Are you getting things figured out? Did you check the stuff online yet? Did you have renters/owners insuarce so the computer was covered?

Nothing like that has happened to me...but living here I'm always scared it's just a matter of time!

Oh that totally blows!! I'm so sorry that happened to you. It seems this has been happening to a lot of members of the bee fam. We had it happen to us about two years ago. I was beyond upset so I know how you feel. I'm glad you weren't at home when it happened and you're all safe.
