- Wedding: October 2013
I have been posting and I just realized I never shared my amazing engagement story! My now FI and I have been together for 7 years, so he went above and beyond to make a grand romantic gesture.
I returned home from work to find a note on the door. It told me to pack my bags and to include a nice dress and my ring finger among other things. There were plane tickets and a suitcase waiting on the bed for me. I was going to Hilton Head. He was already down there and would see me soon.
WOW. I was on cloud nine. So I loaded up my bags, drove to the airport (he paid for my pre-flight parking) and flew to another airport for a layover. I boarded the next plane. As I was sitting there, I noticed how someone boarding looked just like my best friend (at this point I should say that we moved 600 miles from all of our friends and family, so I rarely see any of them). Wait-OMG IT WAS HER. At this point I burst into tears and couldn’t stop crying. She handed me another letter from him saying “you think after all this time I would limit it to one surprise?” It went on to talk about what incredible friends I have and the journey we have been through to together. I’m paraphrasing these notes, but they were drenched in symbolism for the journey we’ve had together.
My BFF said when we landed, she just needed to grab her luggage and we’d get a taxi to wherever we were staying. I was a little upset that FI chose this friend over my other two. I love her dearly, but I have 3 BFFs and we’re always together as a group.
I shouldn’t have worried. We landed and there were the other two with ANOTHER letter. Some luggage. J They had driven down all the way from NJ to South Carolina to be there.
We drove to this AMAZING house which the FI had rented. It was beautiful, complete with a screened in pool. No FI to be found though. My friends convinced me we needed to grab dinner first, so back in the car we went. We drove to yet another house. We went in to be greeted by both of my parents AND his parents, his sister and niece, and still ANOTHER letter.
They all grabbed candles and lanterns and in a processional, led me to the beach (which was right behind their rental home). Waiting there, in a heart shaped ring of candles was my amazing partner, in a suit. With everyone important in our lives surrounding us, at the beach at sunset, he got down on a knee and asked me to spend my life with him. “Of course I will!”
