Is it just me or is there a complete dearth of larger venues in the Pittsburgh area that don’t mandate a particular caterer? I’ve found a couple, but they’re all either very rustic/industrial/DIY or very small (accommodating <100 people). I wanted to something more formal and decorative and we originally wanted to invite upwards of 300 people, but there are just so few affordable spaces in the area that we’ve had to adjust that number downwards.
Any suggestions are welcome!

Is there a caterer that you’re particularly interested in? If you already know who you want to use, try contacting them directly. They should have a list of venues that they contract with. That can help get you started on finding a suitable location.

I think finding a space that fits 300 and is already more formal -without the need to decorate yourself- will be difficult. I could name a few places, but I don’t know what you are willing to spend or if all of them let you bring in a person.
However, if you are looking for a simple list of places and some basic facts, get the wedding issue of Whirl magazine that comes out every so often. It is pretty great guide. It is a western Pennsylvania based publication that should have stuff both outside and inside the city proper.
