We asked the photographer why people never smiled for pics during that era. I thought it was due to the lack of dental hygeine during that period but the photographer said it was because of the wet plate process. Folks had to hold the pose for a minimum of 18 seconds and smiles tend to droop after a bit so the photographers told their clients not to smile!
It does look authentic, out of curiousity what made you decide to do this?
My husband is a Civil War buff and the first time we went to Gettysburg together, we had our pics done. We liked the result so much that we used the pic for our engagement announcement in the newspaper.
Although we got some lovely wedding pics, I did not like any of the solo pics of me. So almost a year after the wedding, I decided to have solo pics of me done at the same studio - figuring the style will do my Victorian-inspired wedding dress justice! I will post those after I get them. The picture I posted today was done just for fun!

My photo shoot went well and I will end up with several photos I really like. Unfortunately I did not come home with any as the photography studio was really busy and it will probably be next week until I get the pics. However, we decided for the three of us to do a Civil War era pic just for fun. I am on the left, my MOH is in the middle and my BM is on the right.
