Well I was talking to my mom yesterday about the wedding and she wanted to know if I was going to change anything since we are postponing 6 months.

I did mention that I might try on more dresses (going to LA) because I had fallen in love with a picture in a magazine and wanted to know how it fits.

She was like oh good because I hate your dress.

    Um really - ouch.

Good news is that she hates the dress I am trying on too LOL

She wants me in something plain and regal and satin.   I  have explained gently that I am NOT fond of satin but she just loves it and wants me to look dignified.

Anyone else having fun with family members that hate your taste?  I really am not terribly upset by it but wish they would learn to keep those negative nasty thoughts to themselves

    Here is my original dress

My mom let it slip that she *hates* my wedding dress : wedding M424C

Here is the dress I am driving to LA to try on

I'm sorry your mom said that to you. That's a terrible thing for her to say. I really, really like your original dress.

If it makes you feel better, when I tried on the dress I ended up getting I came home and showed the FI (I don't care if he sees it before the wedding) and his response was "isn't lace for old people?"  I got the dress anyway, it makes me feel amazing and I love it!  For whats its worth I like the first dress a lot, but I'm not terribly fond of the second dress you posted.  Goodluck and go with whatever makes you feel great!

Why are some mothers so painfully blunt?  My mom is the same way, so I can feel your pain.  And my mother doesn't mean to be malicious, she just feels that because I am her child she can doesn't have to bother with being tactful about her opinions.

That said, I think your dress is beautiful.  I also like your dress you are going to try on, but I do think I much prefer the first one.  Of course, what matters is what YOU like.  If you find the dress for you, you will glow when you wear it and THAT dress will look the best on you.

    Dignified! haha

I'm sorry she did this.  But I also have to admit that the first dress is gorgeous and I'm not a fan of the 2nd.  This is YOUR wedding though, so wear whatever you want, regardless of your mom's opinion!

I really like the first dress.

Honestly, I don't like the 2nd one at all. The shape of the bodice is beautiful but all those rosettes are WAY too much and would definitely detract from you on your wedding day.

The 2nd dress is a dress where all guests would be seeing the dress (and not you), dress 1 is a beautiful dress where they will look at the dress but they will also see YOU in it and how it enhances YOUR beauty.

    @agerard23: LOL.

I really like the first one. I saw a similar one at DB and wished I had the budget to even try it on. :) I'm sorry, the second one just looks strange to me - but I think whatever you love most, get! It's your wedding, not your mom's (or any of ours)! ;)

on the models i like the first one and love the second. i would need to see them on you to possibly change my mind to love or like both or love the first and like the second.  i also am not necessarily a huge satin fan and think some of the best dresses are not satin, and i assume you bought the first dress because it suited you and your body type!  so i can only imagine you look fantastic in it!  the second one is more "statement" though (which i love), so if you want to change your style or look, i think its worth trying on!

OK here is me in the first dress - I do have a big personality and can probably pull off the second dress.  I am not an etheral beauty - takes ALOT to over power me - but I do want to try it on because it is very unique and couture and I know I will either love it or hate it on

You know since you are looking into getting a ballgown-ish dress and I know how hard those are to sit in (I'm having the same problem) maybe you could wear one for the ceremony and the one you have for the reception and just really piss her off. I meany ou spent the money why not wear both as both are gorgeous.

Also I know how it is. My mom went behind my back and bought a dress that I hated and expected me to pay for it because she hated my dress. I'm sorry she said that to you but for me my mom hating it so much and doing what she did gave me a new love for my dress.

I say wear the bigger skirted one for the ceremony and the lace one for the reception so you can sit down :).

@unixfairy: Def stay with the first dress. The rosettes on the second are overpowering.

Sorry your mom said that... but maybe she's just "old fashioned" lol

Just know you and your mom are from different generations and that means you two will likely have different tastes in clothing.  It is a generational thing.  My step mom was okay with my dress but we went on and on about me not wearing hose and a slip. With her crowd, that is absolutely unheard of.  In my crowd, NOBODY wears hose anymore.  Not even in the winter!  And, I haven't worn a slip since I was a little girl and my mom made me wear one.  If a dress doesn't have a lining or is too thin to wear without a slip I just don't buy it.  Like I said, it is a generational thing!

OOOH moms, they mean well but don't always say the right things lol. I guess my only question is, is your mother wearing the dress? No? Then I'd wear what you want and she can pick out her own MOB dress. Heck she can even wear plain satin if she wants :)

I love both, so much personality! Enjoy!

My mum said the same thing about a very popular dress I loved. It did put me off it, I couldn't walk down the aisle in something she didn't like. I think it depends how much your mums opinion matters to you. Unfortunatly for me, it matters!

I like the idea of the second one. Cool ball gown with a bit of crazy thrown in. But I don't like the execution. It looks like the skirt was attacked by birds. I mean it's crazy awesome, but I couldn't get the birds nest picture out of my mind.

Love your first dress, it is truly gorgeous.

My mom was in the hospital and could not go dress shopping with me.  After I ordered my dress, sis and I took a catalog up to the hospital opened to the page with my dress on it.  It has ruffles down the back.  My mom, not realizing that we were handing her the picture of the dress I ordered, said something along the lines of "who would want all that crap on their backside".  She felt so bad when I told her that was my dress.

stick with the first dress - looks great on you!

and dont feel bad my mom hated my dress too - in time she came around and loved it - mostly because *I* loved it and would light up in it.

I too dislike satin. Oh, I'm sure it does look 'regal' until you sit down in it and it gets all wrinkly. I really like your first dress. It's too bad your mother was blunt about it, but she isn't the one wearing it. Anyway, I love my mother and my future mother in law, and I think they have reasonable taste; however, I wouldn't wear their clothes. Ultimately, everyone has their own taste and thank goodness for that!

You look stunning in your first dress. I think you should wear what you want. My mother said she flat out hated the one dress I really loved too. She then proceeded to send me email after email with links to dresses she loved--I hated all of them. My mother doesn't have good taste, so I'm basically ignoring her suggestions. Everyone else I sent a picture of myself wearing the dress to loved it and thought she was crazy.

Your first dress is gorgeous! And looks really great on you.

That second one is a hot mess, imo. It reminds me of Kleenex with dust bunnies. Again, just my opinion, but it seems like the sort of thing that you'd see your pictures in ten years and ask "What was I THINKING?"
