Her dress is amazing!  So much to work with!  I think it would look really nice if you just had the sleaves taken of, or had some shorter lace sleaves added.  So pretty though!

If you could find a seamstress you trust, you should go for it. There’s so much amazing potential there! The worst that could happen is that you hate it and take pieces of the dress and use them in another design.

I think taking off the sleeves but keeping the lace across the chest could look really nice.

I think it’s such a sweet idea to wear your mother’s dress, or parts of it. I was going to say, you do have a lot to work with. Definitely rip off those sleeves, or parts of them, and re-work them. The lace on the bodice is beautiful. I can’t really see what the bottom is like but in the hands of an accomplished seamstress you could really make something unique.

I think you should def take it somewhere to at least show them & see what they can do with it. My Mom’s dress is SO pretty like your Mom’s & has lots of lace. I was thinking of doing something similar or trying to restore her veil & my Mom said the same exact thing “I don’t care…I won’t ever where it again!” lol! Plus I think she was happy to hear that I wanted to do something like that. I def would try it!!

You may want to consider the length of the dress. If you are taller than her, it might be too short for you, unless you made it tea length?  What a fun idea! The dress is very pretty, as other suggested you can take off the sleeves and just leave the top as is and see how you like it?  lots to work with!  🙂

I would tale off the sleeves. It could be a very sheik dress.

The tops of the sleeves have some nice detail on them. Could you do flutter sleeves? It might help keep the proportions of the dress. (it’s beautiful!)

I think doing something like this would be amazing.

Although, yours would have the fabric skirt instead of all lace. I still think it would look gorgeous.
