Boredom. They  probably didn’t have anything to do. They aren’t going to sit there twiddling their thumbs waiting on furniture all day.  I’m sure she wanted to keep busy.

Let it go.

My mother has never cleaned my house, but I think I would be happy if she did. She will let herself in to drop off baked goods and magazines.

@ZebraPrintMe:  my mother does my dishes every time she comes over, even if there’s only a few cups in the sink. I think it makes her feel like she can still do something for me, even though I’m “all grown up”. I don’t think it’s a judgement, but rather a sign of love. Thank her, and let it go.

My mom would do the same thing. She cannot sit still and would certainly not sit around during the day watching TV or reading a book if she were waiting for furniture to be delivered – she always needs something to do. Your mom probably thinks she is helping you out, not that you aren’t clean enough. I would just let it go!

@ZebraPrintMe:  Maybe she’s just having a hard time letting go if you’ve only moved out 6 months ago?  My mom had issues for a while when I got my first place.  Too far away to pop over to clean so she mainly called regularly to basically make sure I was eating.  haha

My mom does it every time she comes to visit. It makes her feel like she’s taking care of me…even if I am 29 and keep a fairly neat house. I tell her not to, but she does it anyway. I am sure I will do it for my daughter when she’s older.

@ZebraPrintMe:  ….THIS is a Mom thing…someday, you’ll be a Mom…and you’ll be at your kid’s house unsupervised…and before you even know what happened, you’re washing dishes, mopping the floor and managed to do three loads of laundry….

…its weird

@ZebraPrintMe:  It used to bother me when my ILs would do stuff like that. I found it offensive, as if they think I’m terrible homemaker.

One day, my FIL helped me realize that my MIL cleans and shops for us only out of the purest sense of love. This is they only way she can “mother” us as adults, by doing things she sees as helpful. It’s much easier to accept the help gratefully, rather than be annoyed by it. Choose to see it as an act of kindness.

I was babysitting my niece one day a few months ago, and while she was down for a nap I washed all the dishes in my sister’s kitchen. I knew it would help her out, especially since they were dishes from the night before, so if she hadn’t had time to clean them before I got there, then she probably wasn’t going to have time to clean them any time soon! It’s hard not to do something like that for someone once the idea crosses your mind. Especially if you’ve got nothing particularly better to do at the time. I’m sure you mom just wants to help you out and there’s no judgment in it 🙂

@ZebraPrintMe:  Mine havent, but I’d be happy if they did! I hate cleaning and my mom is constantly pointing out that the house isnt clean to her standards. I’d be thrilled if she came over and started cleaning. Haha.
