I filed for an extension on April 14 in my old name (wasn’t married yet). In May, I got married, so my name changed. In June, I filed my taxes under my new name.
Now I’m on hold with the IRS & my taxes are all messed up & it can take a month for them to verify my name & then 12 weeks from then to get my tax refund. I’m so frustrated cause I mailed them a letter with my taxes saying “I’m old name & I got married, so this is my new name & I’ve attached a copy of my marriage license & marriage certificate”.
Why is changing my name so confusing when I attached paperwork proving it & its public record so they could look it up & confirm this?

I’m so sorry that’s frustrating! I think the problem there is that you already filed an extension in your married name. Did you file your name change with the SSA? That is how the IRS is notified of your name change.

I didn’t change it with SSA until today. I just found out that was the problem. My darn procrastination :/. If I knew it woulda caused a big deal, I would have done it ASAP.
Between the time I posted & now, I spoke with someone else @ IRS & my account is on a freeze. Once SSA updates the IRS, I should be good.

Yeah, your account is probably frozen because you filed forms with two different names under the same SSN. They really don’t like that.

Yea that was your problem. I was told by the DMV that the SS office uploads their stuff nightly. Hopefully within 24 hrs the IRS should have the updated name from the SS office.
