If it was just a warning and not an actual ticket or accident, it shouldn't affect your driving record or insurance rates. Try not to beat yourself up!
I don't think warnings count for much at all...don't beat yourself up! Also, you just reminded me I need to pay my $215 speeding ticket soon!
Could be worse.
Yeah, it won't go on your record. I once got 4 warnings in a month... Hey, I was always late for work... a lot! :p
@Edina: I updated my FB and my future sister in law told me she did this once before no less with her mother in law in the car with her. That could definitely make it worse. I seriously thought he was going to ticket me.
@jamiemichelle: I have a friend (in fact, he's Fiances best man) that continually gets pulled over and he somehow evades serious consequences (he went 50 over once!). The officer told me that he'd put me in his system, which I'm assuming means that I won't be lucky the next time around--I didn't even get a piece of paper stating I got a warning.
@beekiss2: I'm still mad about it. Girls weekend from Massachusetts to Maine and BAM! Eight other people were pulled over on the same small stretch of highway that we were able to count as we passed through. Can we say end of the month quota not being met?!
Jerks.
@Edina: To be fair, this was in front of a high school so I deserved it. I think they were trying to remind/warn/ticket people early in the school year. If it were elsewhere under the same conditions, then I might be upset...but again, it's their job and I can't fault them for it.
I've actually seen three seperate people be pulled over simultaneously.
awww. This is adorable! Someone who still abides by the law :) I wish I would have been like you in my younger years! (No sarcasm, I'm serious!)
@KaitlinHudson: ditto! I'm at 2 strikes in Minnesota (3, you have to take a class or something).
@beekiss2: You have a much better attitude than I do! I'll admit I've had nothing but pretty bad experiences with police (including a totally bogus arrest when I was 19) despite being very law-abiding, so I'm kind of bitter toward cops. If I were you, I would have been in here saying that high school kids know damn well how to stay out of incoming traffic so the limit shouldn't be 20mph.
But I guess I just like to bitch ;)
It' not going on anyone's insurance. It just means that next time you get pulled over, you might not be so lucky. Especially if it's the same officer.
Btw., despite all the rumors, there is no such thing as a ticket quota that needs to be met each month. If that was the case, my FI would be giving out tickets left and right. If you don't try to argue, bargain, or flirt with the officer, or give him some sob story, chances are that you get off with a warning. If you stick to the traffic rules, you have a 0% chance to get a ticket. Just saying.
@AprilJo2011: Ah ok. That's a strong, long-lasting myth then...I hear it everywhere! I definitely do not try flirt/argue/bargain/or sob when I get pulled over. I actually thought that's why I do get tickets!
Even if there is no such thing as an official ticket quota, and in some states there have been charges against PD's for having quotas, I still get annoyed by speed traps. I was following the flow of traffic and in no way driving recklessly.
I only cried one time when i got pulled over.. i was doing 25 over the speed limit and the cop was screaming at me that he could take me to jail. I finally sputtered out that my mom had been watching my daughter and that she had fallen and hit her head on the fireplace and was at the hospital with what they thought was a concussion.
Needless to say he felt like an ass.. and I got an escort =)
i have yet to get pulled over for speeding and i reenact what my reaction would be in my head from time to time! (**KNOCK ON WOOD**)
but yes, there are no records for warnings! :)
I don't think anything goes on your record for a warning. The only thing that goes on your license is a ticket with points, which does increase your insurance rates (not the person who is registered on the car but the driver).
My friend is a cop... from the little hes told me, while there are no offical ticket quotas, you are still expected to ticket, especially if you pull someone over.
I liken it to when I worked in retail. There was no official requirement that you sell an average of 3 pieces of merchandise, at an average total purchase of $80, and open 4 store cards a month, but they sure liked it when you met those goals ;)
Warnings are just warnings, they don't affect you. I could see how if he told you he was putting it in the system, that it could scare you. You're lucky you got a warning, usually around schools cops are super strict. However, if you get pulled over by that same cop again, you'll probably get a ticket.
If you did get a ticket, it would only affect your insurance (your dad's policy) cause your rates would go up. Other people's insurance is usually only affected if some type of physical damage is done (like you hit another car & you didn't have insurance, only then would it affect your FI's parent's insurance).
Thanks for all the replies! Since then I've been very careful in that area. I noticed today they were patrolling again and pulling people over. In the last week, I've been tailgated in that area but I don't care b/c I don't want to hurt someone/get a ticket!
Sheesh - not a good way to start the morning, but as many said, at least the warning doesn't go on your record!
I've only had one ticket, but my hubby (then just new boyfriend) once watched me talk my way out of a ticket after barrelling down a hill at 45 in a 30 zone. I was up front about the fact that I was speeding, and said I was a little over excited and wasn't paying attention. The officer winked at hubby and let me off with a warning - something the hubs still grumbles about to this day :-)
I also have a bad habit of forgetting to turn on my lights at night when I'm in well lit areas - my dash is always lit so I don't always think about it, until I got pulled one night, though the cop was nice enough to let me off with a warning. And sometimes I just have weird situations - like when I rolled through a stop sign because of a coughing fit when I had bronchitis - fortunately it was the middle of the night and just me and the cop on the road. Apparently I looked like death warmed over and he sent me home with a warning and told me to get some sleep!

now has a warning on it. I was careless today, as I was turning/accelerating up a hill I went above the speed limit in the school zone. I feel awful, it was a careless and terrible mistake. Ugh! I just needed to vent a little. I seriously prided myself on never doing anything unlawful. :/
Does anyone know how long warnings stay on the record? Also, I was in my Fiance's car which is registered in his and his parents names w/ their insurance. I mean, I'm covered under my dad's policy but will it affect any of their insurances? Will affect my insurance rates when I go to get insurance in January?
Other than that, today is beautiful but I still feel so guilty.
