I don't think so - but check out your laws surrounding hosting a party.
In our state, as a host YOU are responsible for your guests' alcohol consumption, Meaning, god forbid, if something happens to someone after they leave your party (DUI, accident) YOU are responsible just as much as they are.
I would do a lot of research! My venue charged an extra $2k for providing a bartender, and then we would be responsible for providing insurance, and like the pp if you supply the alcohol you are responsible for whoever drinks it.
I would ask the caterer or venue. Normally those are the two responsible for hiring the bartender. I would think it'd be okay but check with them to make sure they're not insulted or charge a fee for hiring someone else.
My brother-in-law was our bartender (our venue didn't provide one and we didn't have a caterer). We didn't have to get a permit for him, but my parents did get some kind of special event insurance. I don't know what it was called exactly, but they got it through the same company where they have their homeowners/car/etc.

I have a connection to a bartender and I was thinking of asking her to run the bar at my wedding. She's a close enough friend that I would be very comfortable having her there behind the bar, but not close enough that I would invite her to my small wedding otherwise (does that make me a jerk?). My group of friends all LOVE her (so she'll make good tip money...she always does when they come around). We've followed her to two seperate bars for years and she always gives us great service (laughs, drinks, the whole package).
If I'm doing an open bar where I supply all the drinks (beer, wine, water and tea/soda) would I need to get a special permit to have her serve? Most of the caterers I research all talk about getting the permits for you, but I can't find anything about if you need one for your own party. I mean, I don't need a special permit to serve free beer to 60 people at a regular party, would I need one for 60 people at a wedding? Has anyone done this before?
I know it's very subjective as to where I live (Maryland), but if anyone has any advice about using my own bartender, I'd love to hear it!
