What are your hobbies/interests? We don't have a fireplace mantel (our fireplace is Russian so no mantel booo) but I know I would put a few (like 3) photos on it (wedding and each of our family photos) then things that mean something to me like the haitian wood carved statue we got on our honeymoon and if there was room i'd get a nice little potpourri holder because ya gotta keep it smelling fresh!
But I wouldn't clutter it up so I guess most of my stuff wouldn't fit unless it was a big mantel.
Do you have a picture you could post?
@julies1949: No I don't. It's a stone fireplace with a dark wood mantle. So far I just have a mixture of vases and pictures up there, but it just looks messy.
Eventually I know we'll put a big picture in the middle, but we're waiting for the baby to come and have our newborn shoot so we can get a nice, big family picture.
I'm an interior designer and would LOVE to help! ( I don't get to be too creative at work , so love anything that can make me realize why I went to school for design )
Post a pic of the mantle and hobbies, style, colors, etc.

They've done more than 1 fireplace revamp!
This is actually where I got energized to do my little DIY projects =)

Here's what I did to ours. Ignore the garland..it was Christmastime lol The picture, in the middle, is the one that everyone signed at the wedidng. The tall/skinny things on either side say Believe, Dream, Imagine and Faith, Hope, Love. we also have two glass cylinders with glass accents rock things in them. There is one votive candle holder in the middle.
Here's a picture of it with the previous owners stuff. We kept the same paint colors though. Unfortunately we have my husband's big black leather couches and huge tv covering the window. My hobby is art, and my husband loves the beach, photography, and sunsets, but we're using all of those things to decorate our guest room. And I love pigs, so I have plenty of piggy things I can use.
@PrncssDva: That's very pretty! I'm sad that I have to wait for my big picture to be up there, hopefully I can find something to keep my happy before then.
If you plan to eventually have a family portrait over the mantel, I would place a mirror there for now. You can always use it somewhere else in the home later.
Make any other pieces substantial- not little chachkas, votives etc.
You don't have to have exactly the same things on each side- you just need balance.
Or, you could overlap a few pieces of art that you love.
If you like bright colors after seeing your room color & mantel I would go brights! Like red things (do they make red pigs?) and yellows, anything to make it pop!
@artbee: Thanks. Do you have any idea what kind of color scheme that you want?
@amnystik: What a fun website, thanks for sharing!
@julies1949: Thanks for the ideas! Unfortunately we don't have any money to buy anything new (since we just bought a house and the baby will be here soon), so we'll have to wait for the big statement piece.
@Soon2beeMrsM: I do love bright colors! And yes, pigs come in all colors :) I think you're right though, I need to add some more color up there.
@PrncssDva: No idea. I'm in Florida, fireplaces aren't the norm here, so I'm kind of lost!
@julies1949: Thanks! We have an awkward area by our fireplace that's not attached to our main livingroom and I never thought about turning our furniture that way. That house feels very similar to mine, so it just sparked some inspiration.
And @artbee: Sorry I kinda threadjacked, but if you suddenly figure out how to make a mantel look put together, let me know. Mine never feels right and is constantly awkward. We currently have a large mirror over ours with complete randomness on the mantle. It doesn't work, but I have no idea how to fix it.
What color is the other furniture? Other than the black leather chair.
@bree72: Lol, thanks that makes me feel better! I keep redoing it and just can't seem to get it right, good to know I'm not alone!
@PrncssDva: We have two black leather couches, a burgandy chair, and brown stone coffee and side tables. I can't wait until this furniture wears out and we can get less bachelor pad pieces, but until then we're stuck with them!
@artbee: Hummmm you can do all black and white main pieces and throw color in (like red or soemthing)in accent pieces. You also can stick with browns, tans, creams, golds, and greens and even throw in burgundy pieces.
Let me tell you my secret: When hubby was getting furniture for his apartment (when were just dating) he asked me to go with him. I helped him to pick out things and colors that would work for him as a single guy, but then I could throw cute/nice accents with later on and make it a home for us both. He still doesn't know that lol.
@PrncssDva: Thanks for the ideas, we already have more brown pieces than black and white, so I think I might go with that. And throw in some pink :)
If only I knew my husband when he picked out his furniture so I could help! I do like our coffee table, but those black couches are just big and boyish. And I can't even pretty them up with a throw pillow b/c our dog would eat it.
@artbee: YES!! I can see that ...score!! I kidn of laughed at the dog eating the pillows.
Do you have any candlesticks or large vases? They can always work and you can fill them with flowers to give you some color, or do you have anything dried and tall? Curly willow, branches...lots of things can be used. Have any old picture frames you can spray paint and lean against the wall? How about plates or large serving pieces?

Lots of ideas here!
You don't need to spend a lot of money on a mirror. You can find them at Target, TJ Maxx, Lowes etc for around $20.
You could also get an old framed window and spray paint the glass with Krylon's Looking Glass (mirror like paint) for less than $10

We just bought a new home that has a fireplace. I have no idea how to decorate it. So far I've just thrown a bunch of crap on there and let it sit for a few days to see if I like it, but I feel like I need more guidence. Any pictures or ideas? Thanks!
