Hey all – I posted a few days ago when I was FREAKING OUT about being engaged, but everyone’s comments made me feel so much better and I’ve actually spent the past few days enjoying this step in our relationship – so thanks again!
Now that I’ve calmed down a bit and am thinking more rationally, I thought I’d share my proposal story and of course, a pic of my ring.
The FI and I are always kind of a mess – neither of us have much patience, and we get really excited so sometimes things aren’t really executed properly. The proposal story turned out much the same, but it makes for a funny story.
First, my FI was so excited to propose to me that he ran out to an antique store to buy “the perfect ring” while I was at the gym (I thought he was at a department store for a sale and was really bitter that I didn’t get to go with!!). Apparently, after the purchase was made, he left to take the subway home and while waiting for the train, decided to look at the ring because he couldn’t contain his excitement. He took the box out of his pocket and noticed they gave him the wrong gift box. Okay, not a big deal – but when he opened it – NO RING. He had already paid for the subway, but obviously the ring was more important, so he took off running back to the store, tripped on the first step in to the building and almost did a face plant in to their front door. He got the ring (it was just a slight mix up) but you know a story that starts like that will end about the same…
Our four year anniversary was a week ago, but we didn’t have any plans, so I invited my younger sister up for the day. I woke up in a bit of a funk, so I was just lounging around the house in sweatpants and an old sweatshirt, hair unbrushed, no makeup – basically looking great. My sister came to hang out for a few hours and my FI seemed really disappointed that we weren’t doing anything special (even though we had talked about doing nothing prior to the actual date), so I asked my sister to leave so we could go out for dinner. But remember, me = in a funk, so I ended up just ordering in food and we watched TV for a bit.
Eventually the FI started pressing me to go for a walk with him, but it was cold out and I did not want to go anywhere. I kept delaying the walk, so we didn’t end up going out until 9pm (he had been pressing since around 6) and by then, it was REALLY cold. We took our dog (who is only a year old and very crazy) and the FI made us go down to the water front, even though it was a 15 minute drive and we usually just walk the dog in our immediate area. I was trying not to come across as awful, but I was totally being difficult.
We get to the water and we can’t find parking so we’re driving around for ages until we find a residential street. By the time we get out of the car, it’s very dark out and pretty much deserted. We walk the dog for a bit, and at one point in time, all I was thinking was “I want to go home!” but the FI asked me if it was okay for us to walk a certain direction. We started wandering down the harbour, and ended up running in to a weird guy standing alone in the dark because, of course, why not? We were downtown at night.
We started walking back to the car and the guy started following us at a distance, and I think the FI was starting to panic (probably thought we were going to get mugged! – I wasn’t too worried though, we had the dog with us). He asked if I wanted to go home, and I said a very relieved Yes! because I needed to go to the bathroom (probably from seeing all the water LOL). He asked a few times if I wanted to go wander in other areas, but I was being so difficult (i.e. “Hey, do you know whats over there Berybury?” “Yeah, it’s a stupid rock garden, I don’t want to go!”).
So we’re running out of boardwalk waterfront, there’s a creepy guy following us from a distance, and the FI asks me to hold the dog. I take the leash while he fixes his shoe, and am staring blankly at the water, and I turned around and he’s still down on one knee, ring box in hand. The conversation part of this was actually pretty brief. My reaction was pretty much, “UM WHAT?!!!?” and he asked me to marry him and I was in total disbelief. I said yes, we hugged, he asked me how I felt and I said “…I have to pee!”. Apparently in my excitement, I couldn’t hold it any long 😉
We couldn’t chat too long on the boardwalk because of the creepy dude, so we rushed to a sushi restaurant so I could use the bathroom. I had to check out the ring in the light there because the boardwalk had been pitch black, but I have to say…the proposal was a complete surprise and my FI chose the ring himself, and he did good 🙂 Definitely worth tripping up a step for!
I’m not going to lie, there may have been a bit more cussing in my acceptance (I’m a bit of a sailor when caught off guard), but I’ll leave that out. I think the original no-ring kerfuffle paired with my reluctance to do anything plus the weird guy following us in the dark make the story original enough as is!
