So today at work, being extremely bored, I decided to make an awesome wedding registry spreadsheet so that I could see all my registry items in one place. Smart right? Well, I added in the cost of each item for reference if I found something similar online at one of the other places and I decided to “add it up”. Right now, without cookware, towels, formal china, decor items, or the Waterford items, I’m at 4 THOUSAND dollars…!!!! (Granted, this is not the sale price, but the listed price, but still) who knew household stuff cost so much. Seriously. I feel slightly greedy, but much of the stuff my FH and I have, we’ve had since college so it’s in the 7-10 years of use catagory already and it’s been used and abused. We also don’t have a single piece of “entertaining ware” or any platters or serving dishes for when we have family over for dinner, which has been often.
If I do the math.. 4K divided by 115 items = Approx $35 per item. Which, isn’t bad at all.
Anyone else do the math out on a gift registry?
I’d be happy to share my excel spreadsheet if anyone wants it 🙂

Woo-ee….you just made me curious to check, and it’s true what they say- curiosity does kill the cat. My registries ended up valuing just over 10K, and here’s the real kicker- it’s all bought. I’m going to have to be extra thoughtful in my thank you cards.

Well, you made me curious! So I had to do it too 🙂 It helps that I’m sitting on a conference call, ha! I just added it up with a calculator
Amazon – 1,206.38 for 12 items = average $100.53 each. That’s because this is almost all IKEA furniture 😉
Target – $1,728.68 for 34 items = average $50.84 each. Skewing this one – KitchenAid Mixer, Wii (both already bought, WHEEE!) and a big ass flat screen TV 😉
Bed Bath & Beyond – $1,098.56 for 44 items = average $24.97. This includes 2 vacuums!
Crate & Barrel – $571.76 for 69 items = average $8.29
Grand Total – $4,605.38 for 159 items = $28.96 average each

I had added mine up before.. months ago but couldn’t remember the total. I just added everything up again.
We only did one registry with bed bath and beyond which totals 7056.69 for 195 items. We sent out 80 invites for a total of 180 people (but ended up haveing around 140 attend the wedding). The average price is 36.18 per item.
Seems like a crazy amount and we were of course encouraged by bbb to add more and more. The registry lady put our china on for us and put 12 settings when I only asked for 8 and added all sorts of crazy expenisve platters and such that were $$$. I deleted all of that quickly though…

@almostmrsc: We haven’t started our registry yet, but I’d love the spreadsheet!
@thewheelsonthebus: You answered what I was afraid to ask due to people being mean. FH and I have been living together for over a year, and for Christmas I bought him, I mean us, a 60″ flat screen HDTV blah blah — but we’re still using an old tube TV in our bedroom, so we were curious if it would be APPROPRIATE to put a TV or electronics on our registry. Did you have any negative comments from electronics on your registry? I mean obviously not, since they’re both bought — but I wish I could get some more feedback on this!
Ladies of the Hive — what are your opinions. I know gifts are completely optional but are you viewed badly if you put electronics on your registry instead of that slow cooker??

@Summy00: The only negative things I heard were from my mom. And she’d have those regardless of what we did. 🙂
We registered for some ‘weird’ as she put it, things: Wii, 37″ (I think) flat screen, some video games, board games, and DVDs. We made a rule/guideline for ourselves that we could register only for things that we used together. So the bike I really want and a netbook I need = not ok.
Most people have told us how nice it is giving us stuff that they KNOW we’ll be able to enjoy. For my shower I got a Wii Controller and a Game and Season 1 of Archer on DVD from 2 cousins… plus some folding camp chairs with my college logo and a tailgating bucket set from a friend, and Family Guy Trivial Pursuit from another. my mom thought all of it was strange and had told me a few times to take that stuff off the registry. I’m glad we didn’t 🙂
And the same cousin that bought the controller for the shower bought us the Wii this week 🙂
Register for what you think you want and need, not what a checklist says. Just be ready for the comments you may get from the naysayers. Even with my mom’s complaints, I’m SO glad we did it!

What a fun and time-killing idea!
Kohl’s – 39 items for $1454 $37.00 average. $765 bought so far
BBB – 150 items for $3367 $22.00 average $921 bought so far
Total: 189 items for $4821 $25.50 average $1686 bought so far
That shocks me not only how much it’s worth, but how much has been purchased (and received through showers, etc.)!

OMG! I almost wish I had not read this thread, because it compelled me to do the same to mine and I did not want to know this!
Grand total 302 items at $11,033.63 = $36.54/item WOWOWOW!!!
If I have any defense is that a-we have literally nothing right now to start with and b-we’re having a 200+ wedding and were told to register for 1-2 items per person. We do have a few high cost items, but 92 of the 302 items is less than $20. Still, I’m SHOCKED! ….. as MrsMcGyro said, this has made me EXTRA appreciative for the items we’re receiving!!

Ours totals $6803.36 for 211 items for an average of $32.24 per item

Okay, this did get me thinking.
I just did the Bed Bath and Beyond one…
168 itemes…$3,508.84 for an average $20,86.

Oh my gosh. I’m with @vabride2011; I kind of wish I hadn’t felt compelled to do this now, since I’m a little appalled (especially in comparison with all of you) at how much we’re registered for–close to 9k, with an average price of about $50. Almost all the stuff at Macy’s goes on sale regularly, though, so the most expensive things are all there and they’re in my spreadsheet at retail, but are usually about 50% off, which helps a little. I am definitely registered for really high end cookware, though, since I cook a ton and we need to upgrade. There’s a lot of All Clad (=$$$) going on.

You’re not being greedy, you’re allowed to want that stuff! And really, there’s no other time that you’ll be able to get it all gifted to you.
I just added up all the items on my baby registry b/c we had our shower and I needed to know what else we have to buy. It’s over $600 worth of stuff, not including a glider, meds, bath items, and diapers. And that’s after having a shower with 65 people attending and bringing lots of gifts. It’s crazy!

@thewheelsonthebus: I reckon so. I mean the worse that can happen is you won’t get it. I’ve been used to the nay-saying comments my whole life. We’re going through it right now with some people and their choice opinions on our wedding date and how “soon” it is.
We’re all about dvd’s and movies too, though. We love board games! I’m definitely thinking about just putting on there whatever we want! If people choose to get it for us, that’s great — if not I’m sure we’ll get cash — or something they feel we should need, and in that case if we don’t like it — we’ll take it back.
My first shower is the 25th and that’s in my hometown in Kentucky. We’re leaving the 17th to go up there. It’s with my dad’s mom (she’s a little on the crazy side and very outspoken, kinda doesn’t realize she’s crazy — holy roller??) So I’m interested to see how this one will go, but it’s with some great people and a lot of people I haven’t seen in years, so I’m really excited over all!
Have a great Wednesday everyone:)

It’s a bit early for me to have a registry but I have wishlists started that will turn into our registries.
Crate & Barrel – 151 items = $2,680.60 = $17.75 avg per item
Bed, Bath & Beyond – 58 items = $1,928.42 = $33.25 avg per item
Total = 209 items = $4,609.02 = ~$22.05 per item
Much lower than I thought it would be! BBB has all of the higher priced appliances and linens and C&B is dishes/cups/pans. The only items not included on those lists is towels.
We’re inviting about 100 families. So hopefully we will get everything we need! 🙂

Wow. I never even thought to add it all up. Ours is $4667.89 for 89 items.. averaging at $40
