Ok, thats only sort of true.. my MOH asked her little sister's girlfriend to take pictures at my bridal shower yesterday and she asked if she could borrow my ring to take pictures for a little bit. She posted them to her online portfolio and a studio made her an offer to become pro photographer with them! Clearly its her talent and not my ring that got her the job but I'm still super happy for her! I posted it earlier on someone else's thread but here it is again:

I'm going to tell her that she can use the engagement photos she's taking for us this weekend for her portfolio too!

@blu77: I'm not 100%, I imagine one that does weddings/engagements/normal types of photography- so I guess portrait/photojournalistic type stuff

what a beautiful picture but an even more beautiful ring - is the stone pink? or is it just a reflection from the flowers, or the way she edited it? either way its really pretty!!

Ok, I am sorry if this comes off terrible, but I read this post like 20 minutes ago and didn't say anything (thought to keep my opinions to myself), but it kept bothering me and I got that naggy feeling to say something because to me it was something to be a bit concerned of.

So please know that I am not trying to be a troll or be rude.

I think that this girl should be a bit concerned with this studio. People rarely offer jobs to other people like that, usually it is the other way around. When I looked at the picture, I see a nice photo of a ring and flower, but I don't think it is a good photo that a photography studio would want. I think that if her photos were AMAAAAZING then I could see that, but I don't think that the photo is actually good.

I guess I just thought that way because last week this unknown man left a message on my phone (where he knew my name) which said that "someone I knew gave him my name and number saying they thought I would appreciate a career change" And he would like to set up an interview. He lived about 20 minutes away and I had no idea who he was, or where he worked or what this job was. My dad said that was a scam and we heard later that a couple other people had similar calls. That next day my friend got a call from her "internet provider" who knew a whole bunch of information about her account and they said she has a virus on her computer and they needed to clean it up for her. She knew her computer had been slow and they sounded legit (they knew alot of info) so she said sure and gave them her credit card info. She got scammed.

Also, once I was offered a job, and my dad thought it was super sketchy, and although they weren't scammers or creepy people, it ended being a terrrrrible place to be at.

Anyways, that is why that was the first thought that came to my mind. Sorry if I offended, I just realize now that there are a lot of bad people out there. If it is legit, then congrats!

I would also be concerned that it's a scam :( Couldn't hurt for her to do some research, right?

@MissHighHeel: I kind of have to agree.

If this is true than that's amazing and I am so, SO genuinely happy for her. However....TONS of people are into photography these days and many of them can take photos just like the one you posted (which is a beautiful photo) but it isn't a hard photo to get. Macro shots of still objects are not that difficult to capture. (again, it's a beautiful picture). So it would seem odd that a studio would randomly offer her a job on the back of one.

That being said, perhaps it is a small studio who is looking for someone to help with an overload of work. All I'm saying is that perhaps when she goes down to the studio, someone older should go with her, just to help her check it out.

Again, I don't mean to be a party pooper, but better safe than sorry.

I don't think this is a scam, but always be cautious.  Most likely it's a beginning studio looking for cheap labor.  An established studio with a well known rep and many clients will be more selective when finding photographers (it will take more than one photo to impress them).  Also, to say she is a pro photographer just because she works with a studio is hardly the case.

I don't think she should quit her day job, but def check out the opportunity, it could give her more experience and pay some bills, and be a stepping stone to the next best thing.

@MissHighHeel: That's where my question was coming from. I was afraid I'd make someone mad too -- but my first thought was scam. It's a sweet photo, but it's amateur. I'd be concerned this is not a legit offer. Please have her be careful. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade :(

Unless it's like a Picture People type place?

@kingytobe: In that case it's wonderful news!!! :D Sorry if you stated that before and we missed it. Just wasn't to share my concern. It's a wonderful opportunity for her and so amazing that you get to be part of it in some way. Congratulations to her. :)

@blu77: If you look at my post directly above yours, I said that she knows the people who offered  her the job. And I also find it a bit offensive that you'd say 'its amateur' and 'unless is someone like the picture people'.. I understand your concern but be careful what you say and if will offend people, please

@kingytobe: blu and other pros are right though, it's not a professional quality photo so they're just cautioning against scams that take advantage of amateur photographers who really want to improve and are easily persuaded into all kinds of things. It doesn't sound legit that someone would hire anyone based on one photo, especially a ring photo, and even more especially, that ring photo. It's not about whether anyone is or isn't offended. Just words of caution i think.

@BeeM: I've explained, though, that it isn't a scam. And I never claimed that she was picked up by Vogue or that she's the next famous photographer. I said she got a job at a studio, by someone she knows (in real life, if that isn't clear).. I could show you some of her other photos- this is just one that is applicable- thought I'd share a nice story, I wasn't asking for critiques of the picture.

@kingytobe: I don't think anyone was trying to be mean, it's just the way your OP explained it made it sound a bit fishy.  While she may work with them, she won't truly be a "pro" photographer. If your post had said, "Some friends of ours saw it and offered her a chance to work with them!" it probably would have yielded a much different result. Congrats to your sister and gorgeous ring.

ps, the actual photography industry (especially for weddings and portraits) is BRUTAL. If that was posted elsewhere it would have been torn to shreds (esp. with the story given.) Even the vogue photographers get torn apart but if we don't accept criticism we can never grow. In the end though, your sister didn't post it so it wasn't really the time for critique, I think people were just concerned about the mysterious offer to be a pro based on one amateur image.

@KLP2010: Its not my sister, its basically a friend of a friend.. and I've always been under the impression that when you get paid for your work, you're considered a professional. Sorry if I explained incorrectly.

Let me rephrase- my MOH's little sister's girlfriend took a nice picture of my ring and added it to her portfolio of other nice pictures including her sister's engagement photos, some pictures of her dogs, and some scenery pictures. The day after my photo was added, someone who she knows called her and said that she really liked her pictures, and would she like to come work at her photography studio. The photography studio is not a crazy awesome $5000 a wedding studio like some of you prefer but its not "The Picture People" either. She already got the job and I think the picture is nice, so no need to criticize- that is not the point of this post. The point is to be happy for said newly hired photographer and show off a pretty picture of my ring.

    Is that more clear?

Okay. Let's all just breathe. I think it was just a misunderstanding from your first post & people were looking out for your friend's best interests. Scams happen a lot! We've even seen lots of them on the 'bee. It might not be the time or the place in this thread, but that's all they were doing.

And remember sometimes, people don't refresh the threads every couple of minutes, so the fact someone responded right after your post to the OP makes sense. This happens in almost every thread!

Anyway, congrats to your friend. That is exciting news, especially in this economy! :) I hope she enjoys working for the studio.

@RayRayFurious: Ditto. No one meant any harm. Any critique of the picture given was only to support the fact that some people felt uneasy about the original story, it wasn't meant maliciously. Again, everyone was just looking out for your friend, I really don't think that anyone was trying to be mean.

We are all happy that it's a real job doing something she loves, has a talent for and will grow with. It's an amazing opportunity!
