My sister is ~8 months pregnant… She was in a car accident this morning (not her fault).. She is now having contractions.. They aren’t sure if they are stress related, or labor contractions at this time..
I am worried..
Is she going to be ok? Is her baby going to be ok? I’ve never been in a situation like this…

Oh hun, I’m sending positive thoughts her way!
Also, I believe the age of viability is 24 weeks? (give or take a week)
My coworker had her twins at 32 weeks and each was over 4lbs and are now thriving, happy, healthy 2 year olds!

Did she see the doctor??? There is a serious risk of placental abruption when you’re in a car accident.. my Brother’s gf lost her baby at 38 weeks after she was in a serious car accident and her placenta abrupted, and the baby passed immediately. I know this will freak you out, but I just want to emphasize how serious it *could* be.
Is she still feeling movement? If yes, she’s probably 100% fine. First thing is she needs to do though, is to be checked out with ultrasound right away.

take a deep breath. is your sister ok? at 8 months, the baby is safe to be born. it will be tiny, but things could be ok.

I hope your sister is okay! sending positive thoughts your way.

Sorry to hear about your sister. I am guessing they are monitoring the baby and depeding on what week she is in her pregnancy possibly giving her steroids to help the babie’s lungs develop a litte faster. Some times they are able to stop labor, somethimes not, but baby is far enough along that for the most part it should be ok.
Sending lots of hugs and prayers to you and your family!

@MrsPaperFlowers: Okay, I found the thread! I am sorry this happened, but I bet your sister will be just fine. I don’t know for sure of course, but babies are pretty tough and if anything she might have to deliver early, but she is definitely at the point where that should be safe. Stress can cause contractions, so she might stop having them after a little bit of time has passed. Fingers crossed!

as pp said, age of viability is 24 weeks (where doctors will work to save a baby if premature) even though 8 months is early, if the baby comes now then with a little bit of help it will almost certainly be fine. its preemie babys that are born aroudn 6-7 months that generally really struggle if that premature
hopefully they will stop the contractions and everything will be fine. im sure theyre taking good care of her

@DaneLady: That helps! Thank you!
@urchin: She is at L&D right now, she went shortly after the accident (she was 1/4 mile from home)
@ajillity81: She just has a bruise on her shoulder (from what I am told) from the seatbelt.. She is more concerned about baby. She said she is just a bit shaken (that was as of 9:30ish est).. Our mom is going to keep me updated, she’s the one who told me about the contractions.
@HisQueen2Be: Thank you

@hotpinkbride: I hope so! This is doing NOTHING to help my focus at work >,<
@newname_99: I hope so.. She’s only down the street from where I work (technically, it’s across town, but it’s not that far).. If I get word that baby is coming, I’m leaving!

@MrsPaperFlowers: In that case, I’m sure she and baby will be fine. They would have checked all of the basics. The stress off the accident could be causing her contrations. Even if they cannot stop them, a baby at this point would have more chances to be ok then not. There may be a few hurdles (lung development, etc) but chances are in her favour that baby would be fine!

@MrsPaperFlowers: I’d recommend getting to the hospital to be with her just in case. I hope everything works out for her and the baby. My sister is pregnant with twins and I know I’d be beside myself if anything happened to her – or them!
