The hive helped us with comments on how to do the updo, and I just wanted to post the pictures of her hair on her wedding day last Saturday!  She has straight black asian hair, we used 117 bobby pins, hot rollers, a hair straightener to add body and curling iron as well has a hair piece to add body in the back.

It took about 1.5 hours!  A labor of love!  My sister loved it! It looked lovely with her trumpet dress too, a little bit classic-modern.  She had a hair trial at a salon, and they didn't do it right- they ended up giving her curls on top of her head!  So we decided to try it, and the main part is the twisted portions from the sides to the back.  Loved it.  It was totally gorgeous!

My sister's hair gos down to about mid back. I know that this could have been achieved with hair that is about 2 inches below the shoulder, since I had excess hair to roll and curl. We used a fake hair extension piece (don't curl with curling iron since it will melt the fake hair). The fake har was super easy to work with and roll into the back curls. My sister doesn't have a lot of hair, so most of the time when I curled and twisted the front pieces, there would be white scalp showing. The hair salon gave us the idea to color the scalp, so using Mac charcoal brown eyeshadow, we 'painted' her scalp. It made her hair look much more dense.

If you're Vietnamese, this hair was also perfect since the traditional hat (khan dong) could be worn with it, around the hair style. See the picture.

I know! 117 bobby pins was a lot!  I now think that I could have removed a bunch of them from the curled twisty portion at the crown of the head, because the hairspray would have held them all in :).  I think if I did it again, this is what I'd do.
