The earliest appt. they have is tomorrow afternoon so my only option today would be to go into urgent care.
I have never had tonsil problems before, but today I woke up with the right side of my throat really swollen. It hurts to swallow and to eat or drink or talk. The strange thing is, the throat feels swollen from the outside, like I pulled major muscles there or something. When I swallow it feels like the pressure is coming from the outside of my throat.
Would you consider this urgent? Or should I just wait it out and see if it gets better. I’ve never had this happen before and it’s really weird. 🙁

I would consider it urgent. You could be having an allergic reaction.

@SimplyChic11: I agree it is urgent. I at first wondered if perhaps you had strep, but I don’t think that would cause swelling. Are you feeling itchy at all? Eyes swelling?

In the abscence of other information, no one can make a safe recommendation.
Here is some good information. Do the “Check your symptoms ” on the right hand side.

@SimplyChic11: Well, I personally wouldn’t consider this urgent unless it starts to constrict your breathing.
I suggest to make a solution with either salt or 100% cider vinegar.
For Salt Water: pour an ounce or two of warm water in a cup (you don’t want cold water). Sprinkle some salt into it. Stir that up, and swish or rinse your mouth. Don’t swallow it. Dispose of any unused portion. Use this 2-3 times a day
For Cider Vinegar: 1 Tbs 100% Cider Vinegar, 6-8 oz of warm water
Add vinegar to water. Take a tablespoon of the mixture and gargle with it, spitting it out. Immediately take another tablespoon of the mixture, gargle and swallow it. Every hour, take another tablespoon of the mixture, gargle and swallow.
I personally use the Cider Vinegar gargle all the time and it soothes immediately.

Thanks, ladies! I have the appt. booked for the doctor tomorrow but am feeling MUCH better right now. I just stayed in bed all day and the swelling has gone down considerably. It hardly hurts right now. Weird, huh?

If you feel like it’s coming from the outside, do whatever you can to bring the swelling down (I forget if it’s hot or cold that does this) and then if you are still having problems, it sounds kind of like strep so maybe just wait.

if you do have strep the pain does come and go, its always worse when you wake up and havent had anything to drink for hours, all you can do for tonight is gargle salt water and take some ibuprofen or something for the pain, You could also go to the drug store and get some throat spray or throat lozenges to tide you over until your appointment. If you can take a flash light and look at the back of your throat in the mirror or have someone look for you, strep is red and you will have white spot on your tonsils. If you dont and its just red it could be allergies or just the start of a summer cold. I would say if you can breathe ok you will be ok for tonight but if it gets worse please go to urgent care. Remember its very contagious so dont kiss or share drinks until you know for sure what you have

Drink lots and lots and lots of warm (not hot) fluids, even though I know it hurts. I am the queen of throat issues and I can tell you that being dehydrated is one of the last things you need right now.
