So I have been with my FI for awhile, and we’ve lived together for about 2 yrs. For some reason it has only been in the last month that I noticed he doesn’t keep his muth closed when he eats and it creates that REALLY annoying noise when he heats. Now I ABSOLUTELY HATE when people do this. When I was little my mother used to hit my mouth if I did it to remind me to not do it, and now when I hear or see people do it it drives me INSANE. I feel myself get infuriated everytime he eats. How do I tell him this is something that I can’t stand. I don’t see how I never noticed earlier, as I probably would have dealt with the situation before getting engaged to him (I know it seems superficial, but its like my BIGGEST pet peeve).

Just say, “Hon, it really drives me crazy when people chew with their mouths open. Do you think you could keep your mouth closed while you chew?”

It’s funny, the things my mother yelled at me for are also my biggest pet peeves.
How about a “Hey sweetie, do you think you could close you mouth when you chew? That is the most interesting seafood salad I’ve ever seen!”

Haha I say tell him, girl! I don’t think it qualifies as a fundamental part of who he is that he will get offended about. FH and I have brought up things like that to each other’s attention and it’s been fine.

hahaaha only the other night i told hubby he was chewing like a cow and it to stop it – it seems to be a recent habit so i also told him i hope he didnt eat like that at work.
just be honest – i mean if you are living your life with the man, having sex, sharing a bathroom etc you should be able to say honey i noticed lately that when you chew…..

I agree with the other ladies, just tell him. It’s not an attractive habit to have in general, maybe he doesn’t realize he’s doing it and letting him know could save some embarrassment from being noticed at work or at a nice function.

do what your mother did…give him a slap LOL

Thanks girls! Will do next time we’re eating!

@mwitter80: HAHAHA… I LOVE the way you think.

Maybe it is allergies… My little brother smacks because he has bad allergies and forgets to take his medicine. So his nose gets clogged up and he can’t breath if his mouth is closed. That could be why this is a new thing?

My husband does this all the time and I just tell him hes doing it! His parents didnt raise him to chew with his mouth closed (they chew with theirs open too) so he doesnt always do it naturally. Just be honest with him!

My 6yoDD does that too, but I just try to remind her.. luckily, she’s getting better, slowly-but-surely!

omg that drives me CRAAAAZY!!!! it is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
Maybe you can bring it up in just small talk conversation not while he’s doing it.
Just ask him about things that you do that he dislikes and vise versa, make it like a fun conversation though. Don’t get emotional just laugh and say I will work on that and maybe he will too. 🙂

I agree about just telling him! However, it could be something about not being able to breathe. After I had sinus surgery I ate like a fool because I couldn’t breathe unless my mouth was open and my whole face hurt!
But yeah lol just be honest!

OMG! Exactly like nails on a chalk board. I completely shut down and get disgusted. I can’t think. My guys has been getting increasinly obnoxious the longer we date and it’s come to a point where I almost yelled at him from another room when I heard him sucking on his fingers. I was just thinking of a way to talk to him about it and I read this. PERFECT timing. 🙂
