I'm having a daytime wedding & there is a wedding following our reception... We have the place from 8:30am - 4pm.
There's a 30 minute window where they will start cleaning & get organized before you're even allowed in. In my experience, venues are really pushy when they need to clear out a room. Guests will be out at 4pm & all the morning wedding decorations will be ripped down right after the last guests leaves. As for the food scraps & messy linens: unless you're getting married at McDonalds, I'm sure the venue will have it cleaned up the second the first wedding ends! Don't worry!!
Trust your venue. :)
And if you're THAT concerned, ask them about it!
Recessionista's right -- the venue is likely very accustomed to double bookings in a day and they know how time sensitive the switchover is.
Make sure your DOC and florist are well aware of the situation. That way they can plan ahead and bring in a few extra hands if they think they'll be pressed for time in your 4:30-6:00 time slot.
BTW, I went to a wedding once where the bride was 1.5 hours late. The priest was so pi**ed because there was a second wedding in the church that day. He had no choice but to give them an abbreviated ceremony, which the couple was not happy about, but the second wedding was still able to begin on time because he made sure of it.
The pros know how to make it work.

Has anyone run into this problem before? Our event is 6pm and the venue just told our doc today that they cannot start decorating the room until 4:30pm because there is an event in the same room until 4pm! ackkkk! I have so many items to set up that i'm afraid my 1 doc and florist will not be able to get it all done before the guests arrive for cocktail hour! Unfortunately it doesn't state in my contract that we will be the only ones to have an event in the room that day! Has anyone had this issue and was everything ready at your start time? I am also afraid that the room will still be dirty (food scraps on the floor, messy set up of the table linens, etc). Also what if the event goes into overtime and they can't get the people right out at 4pm?
