I work part time (full time isn't an option) and am already paying 40% of my take-home on debt repayment. He is just finishing up some financial problems. I just had who knows how many thousands of uncovered health expenses last week with a heart scare (I'm fine!). The barrier for me is the reception. There's a place I'd love to have it but the rental would add $500 to our reception bill. There are a couple restaurants in the area (it's a small coastal town) who could do our reception in-house, which would probably save us lots of money. Still have to check into it, and still waiting for the Proposal...we are continuing to talk about our relationship and our future. Sigh. Good news: the venue I love is only $60 (an adorable, tiny, historic church that holds 60) and I'm sure we can get a friend to be ordained and be the officiant for free. Maybe his folks want to pay for the dinner?Best of luck to you.
I'm right there with you. I'm ready to get married, but financially I'm not sure what we are going to have to work with. I'm not going to think about it yet.... and see what happens when we talk to the fams. My fam won't be able to contribute but I think his "might". We'll see
My mom has already said she is paying and my SO is so in debt and lost his job a month ago that he cant afford a ring right now which is the only reason we arent engaged.
And we discussed this w/ my mom and she is willing to buy my gown! Now on to his parents! I'm so excited b/c its everything but official!!!!!!!!
Yay! How exciting. I also thought I'd have a massive 150 person wedding, but now I think I want a more intimate celebration with our nearest and dearest. Although this the size of our families, and how close we all are, it will still be around 100 people. Sigh.

I don't want a huge wedding... I thought I did, but I don't. I don't want any of the traditional nonsense anymore b/c its just not me or a destination wedding we were considering. I just want to have close friends and family w/ lots of candles and flowers. Its just funny b/c thats what I wanted to begin w/... before thinking we would have to have a big wedding b/c thats what all his (huge!) family does. Then reality of affording that hit... and we literally would have to wait probably 3 years to have that. We've decided we're ready now and thats that.
I realize down payments must be made and things take time to get in order, but we'll see what our options are. As well as see what our fams can do to help. Gah, I hope I can get my mom to buy my dress. Cuz thats one immediate expense to worry about. I'm so excited, but trying not to be just yet!
