I love the idea of the natural look. My mom uses a white nail pencil (looks just like eyeliner) to whiten the underneath of her nails - so much easier than using white nail polish
I'm not a huge fan of the sheer color...I might be better off going natural than doing just one coat, I think.
I don't really like that hair color personally. It kind of makes your nail look dirty. You have beautiful nails, maybe just put a clear coat on them to give them a shine.
@MissAsB: That's my one long nail at the moment, haha! I usually just do clear nails, so I was wondering if I should do something different to make it a little more special. Hopefully, I can get them to grow out again by our wedding.
Even though you're wearing green, I think the sheer is just too sheer, and the opaque is too white.
I'd go for a pinkish/blush color like OPI Pinking of you or Make men blush.
@buttontoes: I should add a picture of my natural nail...not a fan of pinks so much because they tend to make my skin look reddish.
Why not try a pop of colour? If you don't like pinks or blushes and you're feeling bold, they could be your "something blue."
@Beluga: The problem is, blue tends to make me look hypothermic because I'm so pale...and it might be too much against the green in my dress (clashy). Besides, my eyes are my "something blue"! ;)
@IlsaLund: I wonder if maybe natural with some clear polish would be better than a sheer ivory.
maybe go with a fun purple. I think purple and green go together well, and its a good winter color.
Or a nice bronze color, but one that is still sheer.
Make Men Blush is a little bronzier than pink. I think a color with bronze undertones would be really pretty like the Essie one the pp posted.
I think you might just need a sheer with a bit more sparkle to it.
I want something kind of vintage-y as well...was thinking of some sort of red, but that might be too Christmas-y, especially in December.
@Statutory Grape: I love red nails, but I don't think that would work with a green dress. Unless you don't mind the christmas-y look. Have you considered a DIY french manicure?
Another thing to consider is that my engagement ring has a garnet in it, not a diamond, which adds a ton of color to my hand anyway...perhaps a neutral would be best, then?
@Krises: I am really not a fan of French manicures, DIY or otherwise. I wore red nails with a green dress for our e-pics and it looked okay...but the green in this dress is deeper/darker than that one, so I'm not sure.
I actually like the sheer, but with only maybe 2 coats versus 3. Usually a third coat just makes polish darker and "chunkier" which would lead it to chip more easy and not last as long.
If you wanted to try something different other than the sheer you could also try a more off white color like Essie's Like Linen or O.P.I.'s Matched Luggage.
Whichever color you decide, the major challenge with wearing these types of colors is making sure each coat of the polish is even.
Good luck!
@HotSauce: If I did go with this sort of color, I'd probably just use white since there doesn't seem to be much difference between the ivory and white, anyway. I'd definitely do my nails the morning-of, too, so they look fresher.
Although...we're doing bowling as an afterparty, so maybe natural nails would be best.
Check out OPI colors, there are TONS and they're awesome! Maybe a dark chocolate brown polish? It's not as harsh as black (although I love black polish) but has a certain sophistication to it.
I've never had a lot of luck with pearl/white polish. It seems like if I put more than two coats on it always smudges and doesn't dry properly. It kind of bums me out, because I really like the look of white fingernails.
best rich purple = lincoln park after dark I love that color! dark colors look best on short manicured nails.
I think doing them a more solid ivory/white would look better. Another suggestion might be to do it a solid pale pink? I had my nails manicured with a few coats of solid pale pink and it looked very bridal (had it done for our engagement party).

I picked up some sheer white/ivory nail polish and decided to do a quick trial. One coat was (obviously) sheer, two coats made it semi-opaque, and three made it pretty much solid. My dress is dark green. Which do you prefer, if any?
I realize that 2&3 look pretty similar, but I could probably get a more solid effect if I applied the polish a wee bit thicker.
EDIT: Here's a picture of my natural nail--no clear coat or anything.
