I think you have to go through the more rigorous name change procedure if you don’t want to follow what was written in the marriage license.
It actually wasn’t an issue for me, even though our marriage certificate has a slightly different name than what I ended up changing to. Our certificate just says First Middle HisLast, but I ended up with First Middle Maiden HisLast. When I sent in the papers to the Social Security Administration, I just put what I wanted and attached the copy of our marriage certificate, and it all came back with the name I wanted.
You should at least try to change it the way you want with the SSA, and if they tell you no, then you’ll have to go the difficult route of a court petition. I think they’ll probably let you do it, but you never know in California!
