I am so confused!
On our marriage license we had to put our new names (even if we kept our old ones, there were two places to sign).
So, when I changed my name, it was right then when we were filing the certificate.
How is everyone else changing their name after the wedding? Or are the laws and marriage licenses different in different states?
(For reference, I’m in Hawaii.)

you’re not done changing your name! now you have to bring copies of your marriage license to the dmv, social security, bank, workplace, etc. to get your name changed there too.

Everything kitzy says is correct. On the license you stated what you would like your name to be after the marriage but you have no legally changed it. You need to get over to Social Security.

Oh, no – you still have to do all the social security paperwork, new driver’s license, etc. Your marriage license alone does not replace that.
I got married in CA, and my new name is on the license/certificate. But I still had to go to Social Security to change my name on my card, get a new driver’s license, etc. It doesn’t shortcut anything for you by having the new name on the license.

@kitzy:yes, i’ve done all that, but it seems that many other people are still deciding whether or not to change it, but they’re already married. can you still do that?
Edit: i’ve done social security, passport, driver’s license, work, credit cards, email, facebook, beneficiaries and names on all financial stuff, etc. i’m done (and phew! finally, that took weeks!)
