MissHarleyBlue:  My guess is that it depends on the rules for the Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent) where you live. Have you looked it up?

I think the officiant has to mail in the license for you, not the couple.  And it takes about 2 weeks sometimes to get the marriage certificate in the mail.

I would also call the DMV and ask if there is any buffer period on that expiration date.  Explain to them you are waiting to get your marriage certificate back so that you can do the name change.  Perhaps they have a suggestion too.

Or even perhaps it’s free to change your name within a certain time frame of rewewing your DL.  Kind of like with the passport, I think it’s free after one year of renewing your passport to update a name change.

MissHarleyBlue:  I got married in Vegas and once I got home I kept checking online to see if I could order a copy of the marriage certificate . I think it was about a week before it was available. I then purchased a couple copies and I think it took 2 weeks to receive. Also, be careful because I kept getting things in the mail about getting my marriage certificate through different companies but they charge you more. Just go to the county website and order directly. Also, I don’t think I had to pay again at DMV to change my name.

MissHarleyBlue:  I was married in a different country and the officiant mailed it in for us.  I don’t even think we were allowed to do it ourselves.  Probably a good thing to ask your officiant.

So if they charge you if you don’t renew it on time, then I would ask if there is a grace period after your DL renewal so you can update your name.  I’d call the local DMV and get a real person on the phone, or just go visit them in person.

Get all the facts and then you can make an educated decision: cost of renewal after the exp date, cost of renewing on time and then changing name shortly there after (I had an address change and that was free on my DL, for what it’s worth), cost of expiditing your marriage certificate, if there is a grace period for name change after a renewal, etc.  It will be pretty specific for your area.

Also, order a second copy!  One county I knew was only $5 but that varies location ot location.

That is the one that you will mail off for name changes (like your retirement accounts, etc).  Other places a regular photoscaned copy will work emailed to them, others places will want the an “official certified” copy for changing names.  Then you keep the original in a safe place (do not mail that off for any name change reasons).
