Hmm...good question... wish I could help you with it.
My student loan didn't require sending in a copy of the marriage license though. Did you already call and talk to them about it? They changed mine over the phone...but I know there's all different kinds of student loans, so maybe your particular one requires the actual copy.
Maybe you could ask an accountant that question? That's probably the best place to start.. find one in the phone book, or ask the person who usually does your taxes (unless you do them yourself, then that wouldn't help lol).
Isn't your SSN your primary identification as far as taxes are concerned? My guess would be that since they're issued to the correct SSN, you're probably ok. I'd double check with an accountant, though.
I think you should be fine - your main tax form you fill out will have a place for you to put other known aliases where you can put your maiden name. Your SSA will link everything together. Double check with an accountant though. I still have my car and some credit cards in my old name so I hope Im ok too :)
It really depends on the company what they need in order to change your name. I wouldn't worry that things can't be changed on everything (the IRS can figure out that the other name was your maiden name and the new name is your married name). For example, I can't change my name on our mortgage because they require us to change our name with the insurance (which we did) and change our name on the title with the county assessor (which we would have to pay for and we don't live in that county anymore). But it doesn't matter if it is still in your maiden name. BTW, I am a tax accountant so I know!
Thanks everyone, especially MissAsB!
I hadn't even thought about insurance, I'm adding that to the name change list right now!
My FIL is an accountant so he will be doing our taxes, I don't think he is a tax accountant though so I wasn't sure if he'd know the answer!
@ missAsB - I have a similar question. I have a side job right now and my name under that job is still my old last name (the job ended this week so there was really no point in filling out the extra paperwork to change my name). So when this employer sends me the W2's in January my old last name will be on them. So that's not going to be a problem when filing taxes?
Well for me. I got married and I actually just did a court order name change a week after my wedding. (I now officially go by my nickname.) Anyway, since it's a name change, my employer won't change my name until I send them a copy of my new ss card. That won't come for another 2 more weeks... and in the new year. So I know my W2 will have the wrong name.
It will be fine yrret. As long as you filed your change with SS, the computer system will be able to figure it out! They basically match things based on your SSN anyway. I quit my job a few weeks after getting married and they didn't change my name so it will be wrong too.
I didn't realize how many entities we had to go through to change our name, SS, DMV, the bank. Ick! And it's expensive (okay well I just had to pay the 25 bucks at the DMV). But still.
I now know why some divorcees don't bother going back to their maiden-name. Too much of a hassle.
Why don't the guys have to go through any of this? No fair.
I know Halloween! I'm not changing the name on our home because I don't want to pay them to change the title when it doesn't really matter too much! Thankfully, I didn't have to get a new license because I was moving out of state and would need a new one anyway.
(okay more venting)
And you can't do any of this on-line! All three of those places require you to do it in person. That's the part I really hate.
Did I forget one? Please tell me if I did. I need to mentally prepare myself.
I hope not to come off as an un-grateful bride but I loathe going to the DMV. I even made an appointment and it still sucked.
Thanks for agreeing MissAsB.
Hey shouldn't that be MrsAsB? ;)
Haha I should be a Mrs but I can't change my username now.
Don't forget that you have to change your auto insurance. That one you should be able to do online if you have an online account with them already.
How ironic that I asked you about your name when we're bitching about how much of a pain in the a$$ it is. LOL!!! My bad.
And don't forget your passport if you are planning any international trips in the coming year/years! I just figured this one out as I was thinking about a trip we are taking in May. Glad I remembered now!

So, I've started the long and PITA process of changing my name. I've changed it at the SSA and at work.
It just occured to me that if I don't get it changed with all my banks, some of my tax forms will have a different last name. I'm mostly worried about my student loans and mortgage accounts b/c they matter when it comes to filing taxes next year. To change my name with them I have to mail them copies of the marriage license and stuff, which I will do soon. Does anyone know what happens if they don't get there in time and my tax forms are issued using my maiden name??
