Sounds confusing! I would give your local county clerk a call Monday morning.

That’s a really dumb policy. You should write the head honcho and explain why it’s a stupid policy. 30 days should be the rule.

I wouldn’t worry about it. That is really stupid. Do it as soon as you can. I know you also might want to call ahead and make sure you can do it without the SS card first. Apparently in some states it’s not an issue, but here in DC I was sent back from the DMV to Social Security to change my card first. Then I had to wait like 3 business days and go back to the DMV. It was a nightmare.

Don’t get me started on the passport thing too. We both hyphenated our names, and need new passports for a posting to Afghanistan in August. You’d think it’s the end of the world. lol

Seriously, the name change is enough to make me never get a divorce. lol.

I wouldn’t worry too much – for my state, it says I had to switch my license within 30 days of moving here… I did it two years later, and no one batted an eye.  They can’t enforce everything.

I’m confused. This wording is kind of weird. I understand having to get a new license within 10 days of a legal name change, but your marriage certificate shouldn’t have anything to do with it. Marriage certificates shouldn’t have anything to do with a name change, those are completely different. Can someone explain this to me a little more?

Hm, I hope that’s not the case. I don’t plan on changing my name until I take my licensing exam. Which could be up to a month AFTER my wedding. So… oh well state laws, they’ll just have to work with me. If not, I’m sure there is just more paperwork that I’ll have to do in order to make things right. Geez!

@shannag: and adding on to what brideathebeach said, its pretty much impossible to change your name that quickly.

We were married June 4th in NYC. Technically, on my marriage license it says my name (And DH’s, as NY is one of a few states where men can just change it on the license too and not go to court) officially changed on that day. However, our marriage license wasn’t “certified” by the City Clerks office in NYC until June 24th (Processing date is on the License), and we didn’t have it in our hands until several days after that. I was able to go to the SS office on July 1st, and had my license changed on July 6th.  Those were all basically done on the very first day possible to do it.
