I went to my town hall and got a few copies. They are "certified" because the town hall puts a seal on each one. They were 20 dollars each.
I would also include a self addressed stamped envelope so they can mail it back to you.
How often did you have to use them? I did not get married in our county, so a trip to the town hall involves a 2.5 hour drive each way. I'm trying to figure out a way around this rule, seems ridiculous that a bank doesn't need a copy but an investment firm does.
I paid $2.50 for every copy and my county mailed them to my house. It was a good option because it's super hard to get into my courthouse and parking is very expensive there.
Update: I contacted the representative of the financial institution who I've worked with personally and he said he has never received a certified copy from a client who is changing their name, a regular copy has always sufficed. Apparently the rules weren't as steadfast as they could have been, very glad I contacted someone I'd worked with personally rather than just accepting the answer of the customer phone representative. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate your time and input!
I had to send certified copies for a few things, I bought a couple just to be safe but I never send the original to anyone because I'm afraid I won't get it back. But sadly I think I need to send it for a new passport.

I am in the process of legally changing my name and just got off the phone with TIAA-CREF, the financial institution who handles my retirement contributions through my job. They require that I mail in a "certified copy" of my marriage license - raised seal, issued directly from the office that isued my marriage license - to change my name. Thus far I have changed my name with Social Security, with the DMV and with one of my banks. The DMV and SS looked at my marriage license, the bank made all of the changes over the phone. I am wary of mailing this legal document to a large finincial institution, has anyone else had someone request a certified copy of the marriage license for name change purposes? How did you proceed?
