Business cards! I just ordered mine and I won't be able to use them until my July wedding.
I haven't used this but I have it saved for when the time comes

It's rated by the BBB so that's usually a good sign
I made a list of what I needed to get changed and had printed out the forms ahead of time and had them filled out already. I also listed any costs with those like getting extra copies of marriage certificate. Here's my list;
I definitely wouldn't pay one of the online sites to do it for you because it wasn't hard or time consuming. I would just suggest keeping it organized and you'll be fine.
are you able to get all the forms online?
also when you get married, do you put your married name on the license if you decide to change your name?
You can get most forms online (I found them through google). Other companies will not use a form but will have a procedure on their website for you to go through. For example, for the bank you do not have to fill out a form but you do have to show up with your marriage certificate and your new license/ID showing your new name.
As to what you sign on the license, it depends on what state you are in. I got married in GA and there were spots for our current (birth) names and for our "last name after marriage."
when did you guys fill out the forms and submit them?
I know in california you have 90 days to apply for a marriage license
but in terms of passport, etc, did you guys have it changed after the wedding? same with all others like social security card, drivers license, etc?
thanks!
You have to wait until after the wedding is over and you get the marriage license back from the county clerk, Ms. Duck. You will want to book the tickets for your honeymoon in your maiden name since you can't change you name for at least a few months after the wedding probably.
I've been married for 6 months now and still haven't bothered to change my passport yet. I figure that since I'm not going anywhere soon that I don't need to deal with it right now.
Don't pay one of the online sites to do it it's not that difficult. A little annoing yes, but difficult, no.
Once you get your marriage certificate back after the wedding (ours took two full months!!):
1. Start with Social Security. Bring your marriage certificate and a passport or DL with your old name and picture. You can look upoffices in your area on the SS website.
2. Driver's License. DMV, fill out the form. Bring your old license and your marriage certificate. Once you have poto I.D. with your new name, the rest is pretty easy and I just did things as they came up.
3. Bank info and credit cards. Some require a photo I.D. with your new name so you'll have to wait until you get your new D.L. or passport.
4. Lease or Mortgage
5. Employer - payroll and direct deposit - esp if you changed bank accounts. Business Cards!! (might want to order new ones before the wedding)
6. INSURANCE!: Home, renters, car, life, medical - any insurance you have change it. Now is a good time to update it all anyway. Make sure everything is covered. Including your ring!!
7. Passport if you are travelling soon - those can take a long time to process
8. Any bills in your name: car, phone, utilities, etc.
9. Email accounts and any other things you have with your name on them - most things are not urgent and you can just change them anytime they come up - doctor visits, etc. More things than you can even imagine will come up, so don't try to figure it all out. Just deal with each thing if and when it comes up.
Hope that helps. It seems daunting, but just start with SS and DL and it all works itself out from there.
i had one more question:
if the groom doesn't have to change his name, he doesn't need to do anything?!?! no fair! lol
also how far in advance should I tell my work if i am going to change names? when I get my marriage license back? or right away because if it is direct deposit and I dont change my name on my bank account, will that be a problem?
wow thanks so much for the help!! I am not looking forward to the name change process but this will make it much easier.
Don't forget about your student loans. I didn't contact the HR dept at my job until after the wedding. I changed my name with Social Security before bothering to get in touch with them.
I had my marriage license handed back to me after the ceremony... is that normal?! I've heard that it takes time to get back but I'm wondering why? The reverend signed it so I'm assuming it's certified right? And nothing else needs to be done?
Jeska -- Our officiant took our license and filed it with the county for us, then the county mailed us a copy about a week later. You might need to have a copy signed by your officiant in the government's files, but you should be able to call them and ask.

Hey Newlyweds,
Getting married this year and wanted to know if you had any advice in terms of name changing. I haven't done a lot of research on this yet, just a few threads here and there but was wondering if you had any personal experience, pointers or anything I should be watching out for.
I assume I would need to get the following changed:
social security card
credit cards
bank info
passport
anything else i am forgetting?
if you guys know of any site that you use that was helpful, please let me know, that would help a lot so i don't need to sort thru them all!
thanks!
