I have mixed feelings on changing my name, but I feel like a family should have the same name. (I totally respect those who feel differently.) So I changed my name at SS to MyFirst MyMiddle MyLast HisLast. Got my new drivers license- they said they could only put MyFirst Middle Initial HisLast. No mention of MyLast at all. I almost cried at the DMV!
I am debating about what to do for work. I have a professional license and it will be a HUGE pain to change. Is it allowed to leave that in my maiden name? I seem to remember that you can do that as long as you’re not using different names for fraudulent usage. Anyone else have their maiden name on their license and for work?

That’s a total bummer! I thought that the DMV would HAVE to follow whatever Social Security did. As for your professional license, I would imagine it depends on your profession. Do you have a professional association that you could check with? I’m sorry it’s been such a pain for you!

@guitargirl: You know what I learned after I almost cried at the DMV? They don’t care what is on your SS card, BUT that HAVE to put whatever is on your passport if you would like them to match, so even though they weren’t thrilled, I changed my passport first, then took it to the DMV and they put all 4 FULL names on my license! 🙂

That’s a great idea. I don’t have a passport and don’t plan on international travel anytime soon. I think I will see how I do with this since it’s a lot cheaper, and if it’s still bothering me in a couple months, I will try that. Did you get your license without all 4 names, then passport, then new license? Just hoping it’s not too late for me since I already got my drivers license. Thanks for the tip!

Ooh I’m so worried about this happening to me! I would totally cry if they didn’t put my last on there, too. Minnesota is really flexible about these kinds of things, we’re supposed to be able to have two last names, but I haven’t gone to the DMV yet. Maybe I should get my passport updated first just in case…

Thanks for making me feel better- I felt a little crazy for almost crying in the DMV. On the upside, I found out I don’t have to change my name on any professional thing, as long as I am consistent there, so still deciding on that. Anyone else going by their maiden name at work? How is that working for you?

Oh geeze. I want two last names too! Thanks for letting me know about the Passport thing since I have to get a new one of those anyways.

I did the same thing keeping all 4 names at social security. The DMV would put whatever combination I wanted, but there was a character limit! Since my given first and middle names are on the long side, mine reads:
FullNewLast, FullFirst FullMiddle MaidenInitial
I was bummed, and in actuality, my maiden as a second middle name doesn’t get used on a lot of paperwork. There just isn’t the place for it on the forms, etc. However, it was important to me to keep my maiden in some capacity as that’s the name all of my degrees and professional certifications were earned under.
For general work purposes, I’ve found it’s just important to be consistent more than which name you choose. People just want to know the right thing to call you and what to put on documents.

Oh sweet lord, I just wrote a looong post about this (it’s not live on WB yet) but yes. It’s been very very hard for me. Everytime I tried not to think about it – I’d have to! What name did I want to use for my email, my log in, the database, air travel reward programs, air travel, the list goes on!
I tried to “rip the band aid off” but, I don’t think that was the best approach. I went to SS and they said they’d put all 4 names on my card. Then they never sent me a card. I called and they said I had to go back and change it. Sigh. They’re only open from 9-4, just when am I supposed to go?!
So, I don’t know what my name is according to the SS. It shoudl be MyFirst MyMiddle MyLast HisLast and woo is that long! I have a pretty long first name too. arg.
ETA: Guitargirl – I cry like, once a month about it. It used to be more like 2 times a month… so, that’s an improvement!
