I personally think that they are a waste of money for someone who has the time are resources to do it themselves. There are several sites out there that will give you a FREE checklist of all the things that you need to change from your SS card to shopping points cards. Many also have links to the forms that are needed to have it changed. I will not be buying a kit just becuase I really see it as an unnecessary cost. it may save time, but you will still have to ultimatly go many places and send off many forms.
I had an easy enough time doing it myself. It's easy to start at SS and the DMV then use that to show your credit cards, bank, etc. The only snag I've hit so far is one bank said on their website to send legal proof of the name change to X address and it turns out they didn't accept the new drivers license. Weird, I'm not sure how that' not legal proof.
I just used a short form letter basically saying that as of my marriage on (date) my name is now ... please update your records. And included my account number. One credit card even took the change over email.

Are name change kits worth the fees or is it just as easy to do all of the legwork yourself? Any kits or websites you'd recommend to speed along this process?
