You can apply for the passport now. I just did this yesterday, and all you need is a certified copy of your marriage certificate (you'll probably need to go back where you got the original and have them make you a certified copy). You'll include that, two new passport pictures, and the $75 it costs with the application, and you should be good to go. If you have more questions, PM me, I LITERALLY did this yesterday, no problems!
Check with where you would get your passport - You might have to be changed through SSA and the DMV before you can change it for your passport. Of couse I may be completely wrong and you might only need your marriage license :) Sorry Im not much help, Ive been married almost a year and I still need to change my passport.
P.S. I recommend filling out the form by hand and mailing it with everything you need attached--you can download a blank form or get a link to the online form (if you prefer) here: http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/ds5504/ds5504_2663.html. Good luck!
Thanks Mrs. MD-PhD! I actually have an extra certified copy of my marriage certificate b/c they gave us 2 when we got married. How nice of them :-) New passport, here I come!
@naangel55 - You actually don't have to have changed anything when you apply for the new passport. You only have to send them three things 1) your old passport 2) two recent passport photos 3) proof of your name change (by which they mean your marriage certificate). Here in Nashville, we can do the passport application at the same place as we take care of drivers licenses, so I did, and I had already done my SS stuff, but apparently you don't have to!
This is awesome to know. I think out of all the things I need to change my drivers license might be the hardest!! They want all kinds of verification of identification and residency even though I'm not changing any of that.

My fiance and I legally tied the knot about a year ago, since he was leaving his job and needed coverage from my health insurance. However, our actual wedding isn't until July. From the legal ceremony, I already have our marriage certificate where it explicitly states that my last name after marriage will be my fiance's (husband's?) last name. So here's my question. I'm flying internationally soon after my wedding, and I have already puchased the plane tickets under my married name. Rather than expiditing my new passport and dealing with the stress of worrying about it getting delivered on time, I would rather just apply for my new passport right now. Since I already have my marriage certificate, does it make sense that I can just go ahead and do this now? ...or do I need to wait until I have other proof of my married name -- social security card, etc.? Any help would be much appreciated!
