I don't think there's anything wrong with having 4 names.
I kept my middle name and took on my husband's last name. My middle name had more significance to me than my maiden name.
I kept my madien name as my middle name. So I am SJBEE MIDDLE MYLAST HISLAST. Professionally I am using both our names until everyone gets used to it. And Eventually it will just be SJBEE HISLAST, except on official documents.
I'm pretty sure it's fine to have 4 names... your maiden name would basically function as a second middle name. I know people with two legal middle names, and all the elements you're using have obvious origins.
If social security approves it, everyone else will have to go with it, so push for it there. I have heard of people having problems with the social security office... at least in New York, it seems like certain SS workers kind of make up the rules as they go. (One refused to let my friend move her maiden name to the middle name position, for instance.) If they tell you that you can't do what you want, say "I'll go home and think about it," and then try a different office or another day and try to get a different person to do it for you.
I'll have 4 names too and don't see any problems with it. :-)
SJBEE that is what I am trying to do. Did you have any issues with the SS office like worcesterbride said? I hope I don't have those problems...but it seems like people do kind of make up their own rules.
Thanks for the tips!
If you did decide to give up Mason as your middle name you could always use it for one of your children. Mason is a really cute first or middle name for a girl or a boy!
That's my plan. I will absolutely not give up my last name completely, and my middle name is part of me now and I'd feel weird without it. ;)

I am trying to decide how to change my last name. I want to keep my last name, and I don't want to get rid of my middle name. So then I would have 4 names. I would essentially have 2 middle names. My mom took her maiden name as her middle name and then gave me her middle name when I was born. So my middle name is Mason and I really like it. I want to pass it on too someday but want to keep it for myself. (It is an old, old family name). I am not hyphenating either.
What are you guys doing? Has anyone kept their middle name, last name AND taken on a new last name?
