If you don’t want to do things twice then wait until you buy a house.

A name change and an address change are very different. You can change your address anytime with the postal service and DMV whereas names are a little harder.

Where are you? US? Canada?

Let’s see what other ladies say… I can only speak to address changes which only answers have your question. 🙂

Why wouldn’t you use the address of your apartment? That’s where you live. It doesn’t mean permanent in that you’re going to stay there forever, it’s just your long-term residence. You do not need to pay to change your address, nor should you be paying to change your name.

@jpalm13:  Booo! We don’t have that here–you just go to the SOS and change your address and then you’re all set.

ETA: That’s not transferable?

@jpalm13:  Why not keep it simple then and wait a couple of months until you move? I mean, if it’s a bit too painful to do it twice, the most sensible thing to do would be wait. You can use your husband’s last name socially and in a couple of months, make it official.

@jpalm13:  I don’t think there is a time limit I have been married almost three monthes and so far I only changed my ss card still have to do the rest just haven’t had the time plus I also heard other bees who do it a little at a time over the course of a few monthes or longer just take care of the big stuff first but you should be fine to wait until you purchase a house to make the change.

at least in IL, I think, you’re supposed to notify the DMV of a name change and/or address change within 10 days of the legal change. The name change is tougher than the address change.
