So, we have been discussing the name issue a bit more since we found out the gender. We have quite a list going on and one name was have already agreed that we both like. I just wanted some opinions! DH asked me to narrow down a list of my favorites for him to say yes or no to.
The name we both like is:
Layla
Other favorites:
Adelle/Adelaide/Adeline (i kind of place these all in the same category)
Autumn
Norah
Stella
Virginia
Some I am iffy about, but still sort of like:
Aislinn (pronounced Ash-lynn)
Lorelei
Piper
Rhiannon
Victoria
DH is a fan of names that end in A since his last name (which the baby will have) also ends in an A. So, poll time! Give me some opinions and impressions. Don't bad-mouth Layla though, we've already decided we like that one. We are aware of the Eric Clapton associations, that's one of the reasons we picked it. lol
Oh I like Layla, it reminds me of Eric Clapton (obvs). It has such a musical sound to it too, even apart from the song.
Continuing the "60s rock songs" theme, Rhiannon is a good one too ;) You know the more I look at the list you have there, the more names on it have musical associations....I knew a singer named Aislinn. Adele of course.
I like Layla a lot. Then Norah next.
The only one on your list that I would avoid is Aislinn. No one will ever pronounce it right and she will have to correct people her whole life.
ETA: I think I would only use Autumn if the baby was born in the Fall. But maybe that's lame.
Adelaide is on my list and I've been liking Norah lately.
I have a long list of favorite baby girl names, most ending in A. We're not married yet and will wait at least 2-3 years before TTC but it's still fun to make lists! Some of my faves ending in A are:
Alaina/Elaina
Briella
Clara
Raina/Raena
Gianna
Georgiana
And pretty much anything you can add an "-anna" to :) I do like Layla...that's an old fave of mine, one of the firsts..it is classic and sweet and romantic sounding...very sweet for a baby girl and in the future a blossoming young woman!
I love love love Layla and it's on my baby girl name list as well :) (although I might spell it Laila or Leila, not sure yet).
I love Norah and I never thought about Autumn, but I really like it, its so pretty!
I love Layla! Such a pretty name! I also love Adeline, it was my great-grandmother's middle name! It's such a classic, beautiful name!
I really like Norah spelled with an H!
@MsJeep23: hah! I hadn't though about that, but I can associate almost every one of those name with something musical, whether it be an artist, a song or a musical term. It's fitting though, DH is a 3rd generation musician.
@hilsy85: I also liked it spelled Leila, but DH vetoed that.
I like Lorelie the best!! I also like Layla I just know a lot of little girls named Layla.
If you both love the name Layla, why are you thinking about other names? For the middle name? It's a really pretty name and if your both happy with it, why add others into the mix?
Just wondering. :)
I looooooooove Layla and Norah. The Adelle/Adelaide names are beautiful, but getting pretty popular these days.
I'm also kind of fond of the name Stella. I never really thought about it for a potential name, but now that i'm saying it out loud, its classy! Maybe i'll add it to my list for future kiddos!
My friend just named her baby Adilene, I think it is a gorgeous name! They call her Addie.
Norah is one of my top favorite names, so I'll put my vote in for that one too. I'd love to use it someday as a first or middle name! I like it with or without the "h" on the end.
@MissCallieJean: We haven't decided anything yet. We both like it, but we're not sure it's "the one" yet.
@MsJeep23: Yep, on both sides. :) I played classical violin for 13 years and did choir and musical theatre. DH plays a whole host of intruments, mainly guitar and bass.
I love Layla. I voted Layla (this was our list, too, but another name won out).
I also love names that end in vowels and either begin with an L, or have a double L sound in them, so Stella and Adelle are also winners, to me.
But Layla is so beautiful and so is the song!
Layla is one of my favorite names! It's so pretty and girly. I also love Stella but both names are rapidly growing in popularity. Not sure if you care about that or not. Another really pretty name you might consider is Lailani. I know a little girl with this name and they call her Loni for short, so adorable. Congrats on your baby girl! We named our daughter a very girly name too. Mikaia and we call her Kaia or Kai for short :)
I LOVE the name Nora/Norah. My husband hates it, so I think lots of other people should use it - such a beautiful name. In the same vein, have you thought about Cora? It is my cousin's name - very unusual these days, but old and classic. I was looking through the SSA name lists from the early 20th century yesterday (I love old girls names - current favorite is Edith, which I am sure my husband will also hate) and Cora was in the top 20 in the 1905-1915 range!
@7-9-11bride: I actually know someone whose daughter's name is Nikaia. :) I mean, I don't like that they are going up in popularity. I have one of those "80s" names where there were always 4 others in your class in school and I hated it. BUT, if you look at the top names percentage of total births from say... 1985 and compare it to the top name of 2010 it's a MASSIVE difference. Like, Isabella is #1 for 2010 and it's percentage of total births is 1.17% with 22,731 girls named that. In 1985, the top name was Jessica with 2.6% and 48,340 girls with that name. Big difference.
I love Layla and Norah... Those names are both on my list as well. ( :-) ) I also love Autumn, but our baby is due soon, and I guess with those seasonal names I personally prefer it to fit the season, you know?
If your last name ends with a, I love the idea of the first name also ending with a - I think it will sound beautiful together. Cora is another pretty name, in case you want another one thrown into the mix!
I love Nora because of A Doll's House. I also like Adelaide and Stella.
I like Layla but I just know too many girls named Layla. But it might not be as popular where you live in which case, go for it.
I also love Autumn, Stella and Norah on your list, (in that order)
Love Layla!! It's similar to Leïla which is one of our top contenders as well if we were having a girl... but it's a boy so oh well!
I voted Norah, Victoria and Autumn. I love Stella and A/A/A, but I think they're getting too popular. I would spell Aislinn like Ashlyn if you want it pronounced that way, or I think you and your daughter will get super sick of correcting people!
I like Layla a lot. I have a niece named Laela Jane. I love Norah and Stella.
Layla and Adelaide have been some of my favorite names for ages!
I love Layla! I also love Autumn (which is also my sister's middle name). I like Stella but I know a ton of little girl names Stella. Norah is pretty, too!
My vote is for Layla Autumn!
My real name starts with a V and people always call me Victoria, it makes me insane. It's seriously my #1 pet peeve. I wonder if anyone named Victoria would get called my name instead ;) So for that alone, I strike Victoria off the list ;)
I love Piper because it's so unique, and Adelaide/Adeline are my runners up, followed by Norah :)
I LOVE the name Lorelei and actually plan to name my future daughter (if I have one anyways) that name. I don't think FI cares for it. :(
Obviously, I like Adelaide, but I think Layla is so cute! I think it's perfect for a little girl. :)
I love Lorelei, Norah and Rhiannon. I know a Rhiannon and we were always the two girls in our classes that had "unique-ish" names.
I like Layla, but I won't lie, it's not my favorite. Maybe because I don't like Y's in the middle of names. I know, I'm a weirdo. Leila looks prettier to me.
I don't like Adelaide (etc) because everyone I know is naming their kid some variant that = nickname Addie. It's cute, but...that's just it. Everyone thinks it's cute and does it too. It's the new "Maddie" where I live.
Piper!!
It is one of the middle name contenders DH and I have for possible names in the future.
I love Layla because it reminds me of Ayla from the Clan of the Cave Bears series. She was a very strong woman.
I'm in love with Aislinn.
