I am keeping my last name professionally — however my SO doens’t know it yet — shhhhhhh!!  I am a physician and it would just be a nightmare changing my name.  I think I will go by his socially (maybe) but keep my name to make it easier at work.  Plus, he is also a physcian in the same clinic and two Drs. with the same name…. no no no.  just no.

I am an only child as well (although my father is still alive) I am VERY attached to my last name and as of right now I still have it as my last name. I do not know if some day in the future I will want to change this or not, but I am happy having my last name and I don’t feel any less married.

@Milan21xx:  in your case, i would keep your last name.

i kept my maiden name and my son has only my last name.  my father is very pleased.  my son is the only grandson with our last name so he will be able to pass on the family name.

@Milan21xx:  I do not have kids yet, but when I do I will either hyphenate my-his last name and the children will just have his last name or I will keep mine and the kids just have his. I MIGHT end up changing my name, but I really doubt it for numerous reasons. I understand the whole “family name” thing, but if someone calls us the “so and so’s” I won’t mind…. but I don’t think I will feel less of a family.

I honestly don’t know, do what you think is best and what makes you happy.

Also, some men are VERY adamant that their wive take their last names, talk to you SO and see what you guys come up with. I played around with us BOTH changing our last names, and one of my guy friends even hyphenates with his wife which I think is GREAT!

@Milan21xx:  Well the way I look at it is that I can ALWAYS go and change it to his name, whenever I want to. You can take some time and think about it, even after the wedding if you need to.

I have a good friend who has been married 5 years and just BARELY took her husbands name!

I understand how you feel, my last name ends with my sister and I. So FI and I have decided that when we marry, both of us will change our middle names to my maiden name. So he will become ‘HisFirstName MyMaiden HisLast’ and i will be ‘MyFirstName MyMaiden HisLast’. Similarly, our children will have my maiden name as their middle name so it will always be part of our family.
