Naming a baby is too damn hard

I am with you.

By some miracle, our first child has a name. The ONE name we could agree on.

Now that I am pregnant again, I am terrified that this child will be nameless. We settle on names, then a few weeks later, we don’t like them and decide we need to choose something else.

With all the millions of names in the world, how are there none we can agree on??

(and even if we find a first name, then there is also the task of middle names. Ugh!!)

Stick with timeless and classic and you can’t go wrong. Stay away from tredy and weird spellings.

We’re not even TTC right now and when we talk about hypothetical names, we can’t agree. Like you, it’s mostly on girl names. Or I’ll suggest a name, he’ll say he doesn’t like it, then when I bring it up again months later he says it’s nice. WTH, make up your mind!

Our problem is he likes suuuuper traditional names like Kaitlin, Jessica, Ashley etc…while I want a less common name (but not weird) like Laina because I was one of a billion Jessica’s growing up. However, we both agree on Bradley for a boy (pretty common/traditional) and Elizabeth for the girl’s middle name (also pretty common/traditional but I like it for a middle name). I really want to use Vance as the boy’s middle name to honor my grandfather but he’s not on board yet. I feel like having one less common name and one traditional name would be a good compromise but he’s so picky.

DH and I just began TTC and I’m already stressed about this. There are some names I LOVE and he hates. I grew up with a pretty unique name and I loved it. I never had to go by First-Name-Last-Initial in school which was great. DH just isn’t into the unique names (and I’m not talking anything too crazy).

I almost just feel like the men should take a good look at what women go through both during and after pregnancy and give us the name to choose since they get to sit there looking pretty (handsome?) throughout the whole experience!

My plan is to not mention names throughout pregnancy (hopefully fi wont instigate the issue much), but have a name choice and just throw it down while im pushing or being stitched up. How can he say no while im delivering his baby? Lol

hopefully it works lol.

i have nothing against “trendy” or “classic” names, but i honestly think the trendy names right now… Are classic names… Lol a few years ago it was more unique names, and im sure in a few years itll be french names or earth names or something… Who cares? Go with what you like. Who cares what anyone else says. My names Ainsley… And in a sea of Ashley, Nicole, Jennifer and Sarah’s its quite unique… I love it. Its never stopped me from getting into a good school, getting a job or going through airport security… Sure i have to spell it out for everyone, and explain that its my first name, not my last… But thats half the fun!

Sassy9226:  you’re so going to have a girl! Girls names are hard! DH and I only agreed on one my whole pregnancy! We couldn’t agree on a middle name so he let me have the name I loved. We didn’t decide until they forced us to hand in the birth certificate form!

We were the opposite. List of 7 girls names we both really liked. Boys names?/— OMG no overlap. I just waited till we found out we were having a girl and stopped trying Far easier. We even had like ‘Alexandra’ as a girl name on the list and he likes that one, hates naming a boy Alex. Or Steven or basically any name I’ve heard of outside of mythology. He did have Thor on his list. But. alas. I vetoed Thor.

We could not decide on any names either for the longest time. We finally found a girl’s name that we like. It’s actually harder for us to come up with a boy’s name. He might end up being ___ Jr, but I really don’t want to.

It took us 2 weeks to name our dog. Let’s just say it made training harder.

FemShepN7:  I’ve seen a kid named Thor Blayde Lastname. Fairly certain that child is going to grow up to be a super hero.

keesl:  not TTC, but dh & I also had more girl names we liked compared to a couple of boys names. Alexandra and Thor also made his list! Lol
